2.5k miles over 3 months and have had two issues so far - radio and navigation.

1. Twice I've had the satellite radio lock out channel changes and reset. This happened when starting up the car, the radio was pulling multiple satellite channels for timeshift, and I tried to change the channel via steering wheel jog.

2. Once I had the navigation system reset in use. Scared the crap out of me because when it reset, the dashboard icons lit up, blinked off, and lit up again.

8 months with no problems. I tracked it once and drive it hard everyday (averaging 15 mpg)

I'm coming from 2 Lexus cars (2nd gen IS models) which were terrible in terms of reliability! I've owned my 2015 235i for almost a year without "almost" the slightest of problems. The only issue I'm having is that I get this weird buzzing / rattling at idle from the frontish area of the car. I think it might be the exhaust flaps but haven't verified yet.

Little bit over 2 years in and just last Friday a "parking lamp malfunction" light came on. Taking it into the shop tomorrow morning to have them fix it. (no point in messing with it while under warranty) Other than that no issues on the car. I don't track it but am an aggressive driver and normally put a lot of wear and tear on my vehicles.

Interesting. Do you have a link for that?

Of the 30+ vehicles I've owned in my lifetime, I have found the BMWs I've owned to be the most reliable by far of all the brands I've had.
My 2016 M235xi ragtop 1 yr, 13K Kms - zero issues
My 2015 228xi ragtop 1 yr, 11K Kms - zero issues
My 2013 X1 3 yrs, 26K Kms - zero issues
My 2008 128i ragtop, 6 yrs, 43K Kms - 1 issue (window regulator reset).
My 2003 Z4 5 yrs, 28K Kms - zero issues..

Maybe I've been lucky - or the BMW is pretty reliable.

Do you have a video/audio recording of the noise? I'm hearing a buzz on my 2014 235i that increases with throttle, but mostly gets drowned over engine noise. Would be interested to know if it's the same as yours. Thanks!

unfortunately no, the car is storage now until April so I can't really get one until then. Mine you can only hear at idle and when I blip the throttle slightly. It almost sounds like loose change or a loose screw or something. Its kind of annoying but hasn't led to anything or got worse. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong but I'm going to escalate when it's back on the road. Stay tuned!!

2 years 15k miles no issues. But my miles are way too low for any reliable data. Would be good to see 50-60k mile cars with zero issues.

I've got 6 year old IS350 with over 60k miles now and zero issues besides few recalls. Haven't heard of any issues on them as well, only the tranny going out closer to 150k miles (due to not replacing tranny fluid)

Those are not even close to enough mileage to begin gauging reliability. You'd have to cross the 100,000mi threshold to start judging.

A Toyota Camry, for example, can easily get to 170-180k with basic maintenance.

Yes, a Camry and an M235i are in different leagues, but it's baffling to me that some people consider reliability to be 20-50k mi from new without any problems before going to another car in 2-3 years. That's barely scratching the surface in wear.

Most people do not have that luxury. Most people are driving 80k-200k mile single cars for 8-12 years. Ask the average car buyer how impressed they'd be that our BMW has lasted an amazing 28,000 km.

I can say, in confidence, that I will be keeping this car for at least 10-12 years. The maintenance and repairs come into play after the 120k km mark for sure, and as long as you're keen on preventative maintenance, it shouldn't be much different than any other car. I had a VR6 VW GTI with wiring nightmare's, but ran great and went to 350k kms before I parted with it. You just gotta deal with stuff right away and not let the issues compile over time. Every brand has its lemons, and not every car is the same in its own reliability. It all comes down to the "PM" and having a great mechanic who can see small problems before they develop into large problems (i.e. a good "indie" BMW mechanic). IMO no new car from this era should run into many issues in the first 60k miles, or 100k kms. If so, that's a sign of more bs to come down the road. So far, this car has been a rock, and I drive it like it's got an expiry date, so if anything is gonna go wrong, it'll happen soon

There's also a simplistic thing about these cars, they really don't have much gadgetry to go wrong, like a 5,6,7 series would. It's basic tech, really. And nothing we should be scared of, out of warranty.

Also, don't fall into the "lifetime" service fluids for the gearbox/diff/coolant etc that BMW claims is "lifetime service", that's going to hurt you long term, the same as 15k km oil change intervals.. I do a dump/fill in between my scheduled services, and will continue 7-8k km oil changes out of warranty, as I have every other car I've owned that had no warranty.

That's also what I observed. I saw most people here comenting "other than X, no issues". For a car less than 2 years old, I would expect ZERO issues after paying over $40k, specially if the repair is over $1k. My Mustang will reach 6 years in a few months, and I only had to replace a gas tank sensor.

People mentioned I shouldn't be scared about A/T and a sunroof because they are definitely reliable and should have no issues. And then hours later someone complains exactly about the sunroof making noise:

to be fair, a creaking sunroof posted by one person can hardly be considered an indicator of the cars reliability.

what you should be worried about are threads like this...

Coming from a 2013 GT Mustang that had the Track Package and Recaro seats I can say that I don't really miss the power much. The gas mileage more than makes up for it. I have had one intermittent issue with a flap getting stuck on my A/C system causing the air to dump into my dash. I got rid of the run flats and I'm super happy I've had my car for 18 months and have 39K plus miles. Great car.

Exactly. For anyone who does the whole < 60,000 mi and trades in for a new car every couple of years thing, you'd have to be extremely unlucky to have ANY issues whatsoever.

Between 0-80,000 mi under 10 years...I'd expect nothing less than near-perfect. Anything under that would point to a lemon or piss poor build quality / engineering.

Had a chassis warning that popped up around 7k miles, turned out to be a sensor malfunction that wasn't uncommon for 2014s.

At 15k miles now, but seriously considering an extended warranty through insurance or CPO even with warranty ending Jan 2018.

my 250 had the gearbox and clutch replaced under warranty at 105k. They claimed they were able to machine the DMF to "spec". Right front wheel hub was pooched at 45k and had to get walnut blasted at 70k for carbon buildup.

The 350 had cam gears and torque converter changed at 50k. Later at 85k, it was scheduled for a full replacement of transfer case, transmission and another torque converter changed because the first didn't solve the drive line shudder/vibrations under load. I think we actually ran into this another thread as well but I can't recall lol....

I mean most people have great experiences with their cars but I did not.
