I'd cross shop the two, and if the new mustang had been available when I ordered my 235i, I would have definitely would have test drove the EB and GT's. If you're looking at performance cars, they're totally competitors. But if you're just shopping for a luxury rwd coupe, not so much. Really depends on your priorities.

What a tread! I don't trust whatever marketing ford is going to use. They seem to use Hyundai/Kia strategy lately. Showing awesome hp number and impressive mpg but the first thing you end up knowing is that this is all exageration. Last ecoboost car I drove was a fusion 1.6 and the fuel economy was at least 20% off their claim the power delivery was totally old school turbo. Same goes with the pseudo weight reduction of the 2015 mustang all bullshit their again. So let wait some independant review prior to say that the mustang is supperior to the 2 serie. Only american compare those 2 car together actually every body else know that fit and finish quality and feel are in two different league. You are trying to compare a generic car to a luxury coupe. And if value is you main concern go buy the mustang of course you will get more performance for the money as you will get more food for your money eating at mcdonalds versus a 5 star restautant....

No thanks...

I have mad respect for Ford more than any American Car Company, however the only Ford I'd buy is a truck.

Resale value isn't something Ford brings to the party. You don't actually own a Ford, but rather the Ford actually owns you.

im actually waiting for the EB mustang and the golf R next year. Both will be significantly cheaper than similarly specced M235, just waiting to see if the differences are really worth $10k. On paper the power figures are similar but these are completely different cars, but still want to compare them when they are all here.

This statement could be made about any American auto vs a BMW. It's called value brand vs premium brand. All I know is where I live owning a Mustang is like owning a Camry, everybody under 30 has one and they are a dime a dozen. I can go to a Wal-Mart parking lot and see 5 or 6. 70,000 Mustangs sold per year so literally a million driving around in various stages of disrepair, jacked up with Billy Bob missing 3 teeth driving. Just my opinion but it could do 0-60 in 3 seconds and I could care less.

Mustang EcoBox weights 3532 pounds but that's probably a proverbial "white elephant" stripper version which nobody will buy.

So to compare apples to apples (or as close as possible) let's also compare it with M235i stripper which weights 1530 kg - minus 68kg passenger (required by "Unladen weight EU" rules) = 1462kg = 3223 pounds.

Therefore M235i is about 300 pounds lighter than the Mustang when both have basic equipment levels.

Auto journalists were out this week for an invitational test drive of the new Mustang models. When the embargo expires there will be a flood of reviews showing up.

Next year will be impressive for the number of small to mid-size sports/performance cars coming to market. For those putting the highest priority on "fun to drive" the range is amazing:

ND Miata
016 MY refreshed BRZ with more power (?)
Mustang
M2
Mk 7 Golf R
Audi S3
016 Audi TT(S)

Sorry my friend, but the CURB weights for both are:

M235i: 3,502lbs (3,535lbs auto)..!
EB Mustang: 3,532lbs (3,524lbs auto)..!

Mustang is 30lbs heavier... and with an AUTO 9lbs lighter..

See how that works, it is called an comparison... dERP
Additionally, how much does that $3,300 LSD weigh..? And can you order Recaros, that make it even lighter..?

Please... go educate yourself about the s550... even if you are not a car guy.

Dude, please stop talking about educating ourselves about the Mustangs or being ignorant...I just don't care about the Mustangs, I don't need to be educated. I suspect most here feel the same.

Buying a car such as the M235i is not necessary a rational thing. It's not about comparing which car has the most HP or the least weight. It's about loving how the car feels. I fell in love with the M235i the minute I test drove it. After that, I just don't care about other cars (for at least a few years). It's like falling in love with a woman and then being told I should check another one because it's younger or lighter

Nobody cares that you don't like Mustangs, this is a M235i vs EB Mustang thread.. as many enthusiasts LOVE discussing such thing. Seems most here who are responding, are BMW newbies and all upset that we comparing a Ford to a BMW.

Before this year, I would NEVER own a Mustang, EVER. The s550 changed all of that, & from the looks of it, Mulally kept his word and built a BMW competitor. Sorry that the word "Mustang" conjures up images of the old.. that will soon change. Get over it.

Coincidentally, buying a ugly $52k BMW 135is isn't rational, nor is my $700/month payment.. I didn't let any of that bother me, or influence my decision. The M235i lost hydraulic steering and gained weight.. so I opted out!

Understand, "loving your car", doesn't have anything to do with a VS thread..?
I understand that MANY here can't fathom Ford vs BMW.. so they don't bother to compare specs...?? Or even know them...? The joke is on THEM... BMW M235i weighs more than a Mustang
That^ is why a good many of BMW enthusiasts are waiting for the M2..! And why many BMW owners are on the fence.

Seems to me, you not a car guy.. you are just enjoying your first BMW. Congratz!

Good point, but as a under 30 year old I could care less about premium leather, brand recognition, or being seen in an American car. I guess value is higher on my priority list... That being said, I should be driving a civic s ... But I do want the same or similar driving dynamics and feel as a m235, if the other two cars can offer me that plus saving me some cash I'd be pretty happy. But like I said, at the end of the day maybe that $10k difference really does sperate the cars to completely different levels of engagement, then I'll know which car to lease

On a side note... This thread is pretty pointless right now as it's just a bunch of speculative talk and personal attacks on different people opinions. It's good to have choices and we should be glad ever sporty car in the similar class is going to get an major update.

'15 Mustang: 188" l X 75" w X 54" h

M235i: 175" l X 70" w X 56" h

The Stang is humungous compared to the 2 series. That is a big disadvantage right out of the gate IMO, and it's going to have to hugely impressive to overcome that negative.

agreed.

I currently own a nice 13 GT with tune, exhaust, suspension, rtr and MRR wheels. I was planning on getting a 15 until I saw it in person at the NY Auto Show. To me with the short wheelbase it makes the car look off balance (almost like the chassis doesn't fit the amount of plastic they put on it). That being said, I like driving my GT and I LOVE driving the m235i. I almost feel like ford/chevy are getting into the HP wars similar to the camera industry with the megapixel marketing. There is much more to it than HP/TQ (IMO).

Hey if you like the mustang and feel that it drives to your standards then buy one. As for me I most likely will never go american again after owning most of the brands (dodge Challenger, ford Mustangs, and chevy c6 Z06). Build material and quality is just not there and gearing also doesn't compare to my m235i. Suspension and balance I can't even compare (my m235 is much better).

Again if you like the Mustang buy it... I just would not compare it overall to a BMW.

Honestly... are you trying to compare an s197 Mustang, (w/live rear axle), to a BMW..? ... LOL

There is just no comparison! NONE>
Many people would never..EVER own a Mustang. EVER!
I am one of them, until I caught wind of Alan Mulally's s550 pet project..

Once again, the s550 is an all new design, from the ground up, meant to go head to head with the M4. So any previous thoughts about the word "Mustang", just don't apply..

Jesus Christ, how much time can one person spend trying to prove their point. OP, you are a broken record, trying to reason with everyone OVER AND OVER again until they see your educated and enlightened point of view.

Maybe we should just wait and see once test drives are available.

Hahaha this guy is trying to justify this thread by saying "we are comparing a Ford to a BMW" when it's just him.

Give it up.

I tried to tell the OP just that early in this thread. Obviously, it fell on deaf ears.
