Question about being #1 on allocation

I am #1 at my dealer for the m2. My question is does that mean I have to get the demo car? This is my first time ordering a car. If that is the case what does a demo car usually entail? And I'm not sure I want people driving my ordered car. Other cars of mine e92 m3 that was wrecked and an e46 330ci. Thanks for the help.

The demo car belongs to the dealer and they have certain requirements flowed down to them from BMW (required options, minimum time to be able to sell it, etc). If you have worked with a dealer to 'configure' the car, that's all it is, helping them configure a car that is owned by them until you buy it. I don't think you will even show up as the owner in all of the paperwork when it gets shipped to the dealership. Your ownership will happen when they are actually able to sell the car. Sounds like you already have an agreement with them to buy the car after the 'demo' phase is over. It will be driven by any number of people.. on the plus side, you may (or SHOULD) get a good deal for it since a demo car is used excessively but you also may not depending on how much they want to mark it up.

I should add if you've been specifically told you are getting the demo car, then all I said above applies. I don't think them getting the first delivery IMPLIES it is a demo car, it may very well be a customer ordered car (in this case yours). Usually dealers get a chance to configure and order the demo car in advance of the general customer orders.

I have $1000 deposit down and it in writing that I'm the first. There has been no mention of it being the demo car. I am just paranoid.

I'm in the same boat Cole. There are many members that will be able to answer your questions better than I. Although from my research it seems like you can order the demo car to recieve the car early. From what I've seen you may be able to assure that the car won't be driven, or test drove. It seems like the car will have to be at the dealer for a certain short period of time. I believe this is done for training purposes and to show off for future customers. My only concern are the required options. BMW sets up a specified list that the demo cars must have. I hope this helped in some way

Sounds like it's yours then, especially if money has already exchanged hands.

Bingo - as far as I know, there is no requirement that the car has to be available for test drives. Rather, there is simply a predetermined amount of time it must be held by the dealership before being released to a customer.

I'm hoping you are correct. That's the deal breaker with me. If it comes down to it.

If the dealership only gets one does that mean it has to be demo car spec?

+1, I am not a fan of having my car driven by others. I am planning on ordering it pretty much fully loaded so I don't think there should be any issues.

A #1 allocation means you have dibs on the first BYO customer car. Any dealer allocating their demo car as the #1 allocation are morons.

indeed this is a paranoid fear.. as you mentioned.

For the 1M.. there were NO demo cars... very few people drove the car before purchasing it as it was in high demand.

The same is true for your new car... I am sure your BMW center will want to display it proudly on their floor... IF they are a high traffic and high volume dealer.. you buy your car from a dealer in midland TX for example... and I doubt the dealer will care about putting It on their floor because they will get ZERO traffic for a limited edition 2 door model sports car in West Texas..

Nah! If it is agreed upon it is all good. But to be first in line and then be handed the keys to their demo car would make me go Michael Douglas in Falling Down on them.

So as of now the dealership I'm at is only getting one. So would this make it the demo car?

Very true. You are better off finding a small dealer that is in the middle of no where than a high traffic/volume dealer. Usually high traffic/voume dealer would want to sell over msrp. That is my observation when calling 10 dealers or so 2 weeks ago.

Don't worry, there won't be demo cars for this M2. My dealer sells the theoretical demo/pre spec cars when they hit the ground.

You'll have to ask them what they mean. Maybe they don't get to order a demo car. No one else can answer that questions but your dealer. And only getting one sounds odd, maybe one allocation from the start but they probably can order more cars later on.

Are you implying that there is already allocation information available to dealers? I find that hard to believe for a US dealer. Maybe they meant that you are indeed getting the first one?

No its a smaller dealership the only got 1 1m and 1 m4 etc. There could be more possibly in the future but I'm just glad I can spec it and no one will drive it. He said I can pick it up the day it comes in.

placing my deposit

Hey all.

As this will be my first proper car purchase I have a few questions.
I have a meeting with a BMW rep to chat/potentially place a deposit to be allocated as number 1 at my dealer.
I was wondering if anyone could give me a list of things I should ask for or go over with them when I go?
Also what would you all regard as the best way to go about testing say an M235i to get a feel for manual vs auto.

thanks
