Lightbulb Visual analysis: BMW M2 getting several cues from the BMW Vision Concept GT6

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This thread to save time for you in trawling through a recent M2 test mule thread ...which was royally derailed to a better destination by some other ///M enthusiasts and yours truly (see here).

The front bumper of the M2 test mule has been debated to bits in the recent past, likely much to the "Na endlich, Sie haben es nur ein bisschen verstanden" amusement of BMW (see here ["Form follows function: M2 front end design comparo"] and more recently see here ["M2 front end design examined closer"]).

This time, forum fellow Adem1534 and myself have made a modest attempt to take a closer look at pictures of the camouflaged rear bumper and side of the January 2015 M2 test mules. Purpose: trying to discern some lines lying beneath the camo. Got to be said: kudos to the BMW camo guys - they did an excellent job. Nevertheless, snow, angles and photo techniques are on our side for a soft peek-through.

In the end, the faithful BMW Ranger SCOTT26 decided to put his beer and bag of chips aside whilst patrolling the thread, and chimed in to post a "folks, you don't need eyes to see, you need vision - more particularly GT6 Vision !" type of comment (see here and here).

As you can see below, it appears that the M2 will indeed feature several cues from the BMW Vision Concept (GT6) (see here and here), though in a toned down 'in real life' fashion.

Serious folks, not only in terms of performance, but also design-wise, the M2 (aka "Pyrat2") has quite some potential to create a nervous buzz in certain office rooms in Ingolstadt, Stuttgart and Zuffenhausen. Pull it off, BMW.

About the rectangular rear reflectors sporting (temporary) the M2 test mule. It was pointed out that these also featured on the 2015 X5 M and X6 M test mules. The production version of the 2015 X5 M and X6 M feature rear reflectors inside the vertical 'side vents'. Hence, the M2 might get these too (in all fairness, it ain't quite a looker from an aesthetic point of view - the 1M sported black plastic inserts/parts, which was a smart idea design-wise). As to the color choice of the rear reflectors (if decided to install these in the side vents), here is really-really to hoping that the ///M division makes these as smoked as possible to keep these discreet inside the side vent pockets (but still serving their purpose: reflecting light), or to offer dark versions at least as "BMW M Performance Black Line Rear Reflectors" option.

Side:
Follow the lines, especially on the pictures that got the 'negative' treatment. Not sure whether the M2 will feature an air intake vent on the front side of the rear fender (such as on the GT6). More likely that it will be a closed crease (compare with the crease on the rear side of the front fender of the 1M). Hopefully BMW keeps the 'air intake vent' idea in mind for an eventual M2 CSL or M2 GTS project, if that ever comes to fruition.

Fender size: 1M test mule (2010) versus M2 test mule (2015):
As to fender size, the M2 is more affiliated to the M4 (less flared) than to the 1M and F80 M3 (more flared). For those wondering about the fender flare difference between F80 M3 and M4: see http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...5&postcount=19.

That last pictue of the two concepts look amazing. If the M2 comes close to that, the car will end up being sold out for a while and wait lists will be HUGE.

Exactly. If it comes close to this, this thing will be beastly. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Who wants to meet in Europe??

Great investigative work guys. The rear of the car does seem to take a lot of queues from GT6, which is great imo. Since we pretty much know the design of the front bumper already, we just need confirmation on the powerdome and the CF roof. I don't think we'll have any chance of seeing rear vents before the back wheels since this car is not mid-engined

Artemis, thanks for the mention, this is indeed exciting.

Here is an image that I posted in the other thread, that should help anyone understand the progression of how Artemis and I pieced this together.

Cheers to the greatest forum on the internet.

Big thanks for the compilation of this thread Artemis.
Yourself and Adem1534 have outdone yourselves. Now we need our design team back to nullify the side vent and blend that panel, lower the CSL boot and we may just have our side profile. Roof line may also be a bit low in those sketches.

Some rear track info:
4 series (435i coupe)
Rear track : 62.8in (1595mm)
3 Series (335i sedan)
Rear track : 61.9in (1572mm)
2 series (m235i coupe)
Rear track : 61.3in (1557mm)
M3 Sedan
Rear track : 63.2in (1605mm)

So the ///M2 may not get the aggressive flared fenders of the ///M3 by way of that aggressive stance, but there will be some major accommodation made considering the ///M3 rear track is 63.2in, full 1,9inches more than that seen on the m235i

I 100% agree with this. Get rid of the crazy trunk that'll never make it to production, close both vents (front and rear), and there you have it, the new M2. That profile shot just looks ridiculous, and it really reminds me of the crazy days of the E30 M3.

This is a reach... Might be what many of us want, but nothing radical is going to happen, think more along the lines of mini M4.

Guys you are great.
I have to say it is very quiet in germany about the M2, also in the german m-forum. It is good that this forum exists.

I had wondered that before...but now with this additional analysis, I think I am back on the M2 bandwagon - if the car comes close to those gold sketches, holy mother of god this will be good.

And to Artemis, awesome work as usual.

Great post.

If those hideous reflectors get implemented in the rear vents and look like the X5M rear bumper... Kill it
