Less a recording than a synthetic track based on what BMW thinks you would like the inside of the car to sound like, but dead on that it has nothing to do with any sound actually coming from our car.

If you're in Sport mode with drivetrain off / suspension on, you get the same sound field as you would in Comfort. If drivetrain is on, you get a louder ASD effect.

In "drivetrain off / suspension on" mode you can still pull the shifter to the left (assuming an AT) to get the sport shifting pattern and the tighter suspension. You don't get the more exponential throttle response curve in this configuration, but IMO that's no great loss. If you want more throttle, you can always learn to press the pedal down more.

I am purely interested in the ASD of Sport mode. So you're certain that with drivetrain config OFF in Sport mode the car emits the same level of ASD as in Comfort? Have you tested this? To me, Sport mode uses too much gas and the motor revvs needlessly, although there is certainly a time and place for it. ASD makes the motor sound as it should, but mainly in Sport mode as far as I can tell.

I've only had my car for a day but I was testing this very issue today and it seems to me, only on the basis of a couple of hours, that the ASD in Sport mode with chassis-only option sounds about the same as Comfort Mode. But if you want to eliminate the ASD entirely the best routes would be the PnP harness or coding. That's what I'll be doing, via the harness method. I've got a manual.

Will this work in our cars?

I don't take delivery on my M235i until Saturday otherwise I'd test it.

Chacun a son gout. I didn't like it in either mode, but that's a personal choice.

You also have a straight 6. I swear there is a lawnmower under the hood of my 2013 320i xDrive without ASD. The 328i loaner I had with ASD was perfect, I even asked the dealership if there was an optional exhaust installed because it was music to my ears.

Mine, no. I like ASD......i think. I take delivery in two weeks at PCD. My CA was telling me that they can remove it if I didn't like it and they had just done it for someone that day. Since I want it I didn't really look into any further. :/ It could have been "CA speak" just to make the sale. Who knows.

ASD it's ok as long as you don't have an after market audio .... if you do then the whole thing will drone like crazy with the sub woofer etc

Exactly, after I put on my AWE exhaust I wanted to hear the real thing, not the artificial synthesized sound. I installed the bypass harness and am loving the way the car sounds. YMMV

I test drove an M235i, a 2015 model, for a couple of days in November last and didn't like the ASD. I found the underlying drone in Sport to be too intrusive. I now have my own car and thought I should report back.

The first time I put my car, a Feb 2016 build, into Sport I couldn't understand why I had disliked it so much. Yes it's a little louder than Comfort but nothing to worry about. So I thought that BMW must have reduced the volume for 2016.

Then I double-checked the spec of the 2015 test car and found it had HK audio: mine has the standard audio set-up. I don't think I touched the audio in the test car, too busy driving it. So I was a victim of the 'upgrade the bass response of the audio system at your peril' ASD issue.

Bottom-line, I'm quite happy with the ASD and I shall leave it as standard.

However, with the standard audio on my car, it's not an issue.

Good to know that it's not so bad when you don't have the HK option as my car doesn't have it either. That said, I kinda liked it on my test drive and that was in a HK vehicle. Not sure how I would have felt in the long run, but it seemed nice to me. I liked it enough to wonder if I'd find the ASD lacking in my hi-fi car. I'll learn more when I finally take delivery. Three more days.......
