I would like to believe that BMW is listening to the opinions and desires of those that have posted and participated in the engine choice poll. 84% in favor of a 6 cylinder is impressive.
X2 especially that the results from that poll shows that for 60% of the potential buyers the 4cyl is a deal breaker.

Well if the X1M is going to use a 4cyl turbo of 360-380bhp then I would expect the M2 to use the same. If that info is to be believed

Nobody outside BMW (M?) know what the Z5 really will be. We do not know if there'll be an M version, or if it already is an M car like the Z8. It could also get that V6 that didn't go to the M3/M4. The car will share its platform with the new Supra, and that one gets a Toyota V6. The Supra will come as Coupé, the Z5 as Roadster, not known if each will have the opposite variant.
Scott has said that the Z5 will spawn both a roadster and a coupe version (with the coupe trailing the roadster), and he has indicated in the past that BMW had wanted to make an M version of the E89 Z4 but couldn't get the financials to work, though they would try to bring back the M version in that car's successor (which the Z5 is). It's only logical to assume that a Z5M coupe is in the works. Or at least, that it wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination to assume that it is.

As for the engine, I don't see why they wouldn't use a variant of the S55. BMW is looking to amortize R&D costs across as many models as possible, and two potential additional models in the Z5M coupe and roadster would be the most logical way of doing that.

Time will tell.

Any engine in the next generation of the X1 will be transverse, whereas any engine in the F22 will be longitudinal.

To be fair, he's been saying that for almost 18 months. Shouldn't come as a shock to anyone by now:

Preliminary details regarding the BMW-Toyota collaboration are imminent.

Toyota is to show a concept at TAS 2014, TMS 2013 they have the RC. I would expect BMW to show a concept at TMS 2013, but have not heard anything about.

Didn't they pretty much do this with the last M3 and M5? I am not an engineer but on the basics of just "cutting off a cylinder" and doing the math would put the horsepower figure right around 360 hp where it is expected?

I think if you threw the S55 in the M2 you are going to cannibalize M4 buyers, even if it is detuned.
This idea is growing on me...

If you are asking about 2 cylinders feeding one turbo, and 3 cylinders feeding the other, a crossover pipe between them would equalize the two.

5 cylinders does seem odd [Audi] at first, but it is 1/2 of the old M5 10 cylinder motor. Lighter than a 6, smoother than a 4, and less powerful than the S55 M3/4. Might work.
