Clutch on 2 series (DMF)

Folks

From what I can tell so far all of the MT 2 series have a Dual Mass Flywheel.....essentially its a 2 piece flywheel connected with rubber bands which serve to reduce noise/vibration in drivetrain.

the replacement units specd appear to be sachs units which are fairly universal on most european vehicles

Anyone seeing any issues with premature clutch/flywheel failures in the dual mass flywheels that appear to be standard equipment on any MT 2 series?

The problem that has been seen with DMF's on many vehicles is that they tend to heat up, then you see metal fatigue and warping and then they crack and tend to go off like a grenade in the housing of the transmission

VW and others have seen a great many issues over the years with this problem which turns a simple clutch job for 1k turn into a 6k job to replace the tranny too

Never heard of such a thing on a BMW. If they have tranny problems, it's usually the syncros.

how do you know it's a Sachs unit? I had a Luk dmf on my Lexus and it was a pile of shiiiite. This unit seems very strong - I put the car through its paces at least 1-2 day and its still feels like new after 25k.

Does Sachs make better dmfs and how much do these cost roughly?

I wish I had bookmarked it. it was a US BMW dealer advert and it clearly said OEM reman from Sachs

Here's an offering for OEM but THIS one isnt specifying manufacturer

http://parts.bmwmonterey.com/BMW__M2...al-clutch.html

Generally speaking Sachs and Luk both make clutch/flywheel sets for same application so I would be shocked to NOT find a replacement option from each

VW and other manufacturers have a habit of spec-ing from both for same model

BMW has been using these for decades. My 1994 E34 530i had one.

Tx

All I was looking for was confirmation that BMW was not seeing same issues that others are seeing due to combination of design and under-spec of parts....its an expensive proposition to lose a gearbox due to bad flywheel....and when you've seen it happen before.....

Hi jpnh,
Can't confirm either or, but have a look at this and write them to ask. Think they know a thing or two...

( Yeah, I know it says N54 on the file, but it is under the 2 series section, so I guess they have what is needed for that too - perhaps even the same)
