235i Steering on pebbles / stones / small rocks

Hi All,

I've been noticing a grinding like noise when manoeuvring my 235i onto my driveway recently. It almost sounds like gently grazing an alloy on a kerb (even though there are no kerbs nearby). Upon investigation, it seems due to an awful lot of stones/pebbles in the road that scratch the road as the tyres turn over them. I've never noticed this in any other car before.
I just wondered if anyone else has found this car particularly sensitive when it comes to steering feedback/sensation at low parking speeds?
I'm often jumping out the car expecting to find a grazed alloy, but just find stones in the road. I'm going to jack the car up this weekend and check the front tyres in case I've got something wedged in the tread on one of them.
It would be good to know if anyone else has noticed anything similar.
Thanks in advance.

We have had a tremendous crop of acorns this year in our part of the world, most of which appear to have migrated to our driveway. When I drive over them in the M235 I get a series of popping sounds that startle me every time. It's not as noticeable in the X3, which makes me believe it is the low-profile tires. No visible damage, though.

Hi Morphomeman, thanks for your feedback. This car does seems to give an alarming amount of feedback at low speeds when driving over any kind of debris. Glad it's not just me. I have access to other vehicles with low profile tires and it doesn't sound any where near as bad. If it's the norm, then i'll get used to it, but I was concerned that there may be actually something wrong with the steering.

I wouldn't bother jacking the car up...I noticed the same thing..

My commute is all freeway. 75+... My work is right off the freeway within a mile and on gravel.

I have chalked it up to the electric steering changing ratios once off high speed. It makes moving into a parking lot quite strange as it seems to over-correct..

Thanks for your comments on this. I thought I was loosing my mind.
I checked the tire pressures yesterday and they were all pretty low (29ish).
I've got them at 35psi front and 37psi rear which seems to have helped but it's still there, just not as loud now. Still very un-nerving.
