Jack:

Jack adapter puck:

Mine is lowered on H&R and I can still get under the factory jack points without a problem.

I'd like to invest in one of these - but a little too extravagant

Undoubtedly top quality and much safer than something from Harbor Freight, but $800, handle extra!

I've used this one for the last two years. Think it was on sale for $20 less when I bought it. It's always safe...just don't go under the car unless it's supported by jack stands. It's so compact, I never leave home without it.

This. I also trimmed up a hockey puck and use it as a jack adapter.

Just keep in mind that this jack is intended as an "emergency" jack. I have that particular jack in my car at all times and it's perfect because the jack mount fits perfectly into the factory jack pads. I wouldn't use it on a routine basis though.

If you're looking for a quality-cheap floor jack, look no further than the low profile 3 ton Harbor Freight for $175 plus the commonly available 25% coupon code. Plus a $15 jack pad from ECS or others.

i have this one too and just changed my summer wheels to winter wheels this past weekend. it works for its purpose, but i'd be hesitant to do any real work on the car with it. i'm now considering some ramps so that i can change the oil myself.

I keep one of these in my trunk. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1319770..._noapp=trueE46 e46 jack. Works perfectly. Good for emergencies. For working under the car i use my Harbor Freight 1.5 ton jack and some good jackstands.

Can't reply as to "good", but I got this jack for about $40 on Amazon when I had my E82 and couldn't get my old floor jack underneath it to the lift mounts.. It's been rock solid for all work, winter tire swaps, etc..

(Insert don't ever work under a lifted car that isn't supported by jack stands here..)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also modeled a quick jack pad mount from some online specs, bought a 4 pack of hockey pucks and gave it to our CNC guy to quickly machine into perfect little jack pads...

Only use it rarely and no need to spend a crapload on something you lose once a year until you find it.

Look into QuickJack 5000 SXL. I bought one a year ago and use it a lot. (It fits under a lowered C7 ZO6). This is my first post on this forum since my wife swapped her 135i for an M235 last week.

Where is it stated that this is an "emergency" jack?

The fact that it's compact doesn't mean it's only for emergencies...

A quickjack is an imminent purchase for me too. Trying to decide if I need it in time for all the winter wheel swaps, or if it's a spring purchase.

That quickjack looks like a very nice option, most of the functionality of a lift, w/o the massive expense. I'm going to be thinking about that quite a bit this winter - thanks for sharing the link. Does it lay low enough you can just stow it under the car (push them inside the wheel-track and drive over it)?

Yes, that's how several of the people I've seen in videos use it, actually. They push them inside the wheel tracks, drive over, pull out to the jack points and lift. I think it's got a minimum height of 3", so that's plenty low for most.

Scissor jacks like the ones being discussed here are intended to be used rarely and on a perfectly flat surface. They are compact and constructed of steel stamping in order to be light. Strength is not their intended design.

Floor jacks on the other hand are designed for repeated use, are much much much stronger, and are far easier to lift a car. Most importantly, they are FAR safer at lifting a car. I have seen many instances of scissor jacks collapsing and/or falling over because they were either setup incorrectly, the e-brake not set (i.e. the car rolls slightly backwards), or weren't used on a perfectly flat and level surface. Emergency scissor jacks are great for emergencies. I keep one in my M235 at all times as well as a tire plug kit.

It really doesn't make any sense to buy a $20 scissor jack for swapping wheels when you can buy a fairly decent 1.5-2.0 ton floor jack for $30-40. I have a $120 Harbor Freight low-profile jack and three $30-40 1.5 ton jacks. A 1.5 ton jack is small and lightweight. I'd suggest buying two floor jacks and a set of jack stands for wheel swaps and having a scissor jack in the car if you're experienced with installing temporary tire plugs.

I 'm seeing a bunch of interest in QuickJack. If you buy one, use 2x6s to fill the cavities in the lift platform and it becomes so much easier to use. (Especially on a BMW with the integral jacking blocks under it) Our car can be lifted to max height in about one minute after the engine is shut off.
