now THIS is PERFECT. The original M3 came about due to BMW wanting to go racing first and foremost. They only made the street car b/c the racing series required at leat 500 units to sold as street cars to the public.

IF the M2 is based off this M235 'racing' car then AND the M2 comes out of the box with those fenders then, we've just returned to the real M roots. M for motorsports, before M marketing.

For me it is a no-brainer to sell my 1M for an M2 inspired by and based on a actual race car, with idiotic boxed fenders. I might even tolerate a 4cyl so long as it pushes +400hp. It is not a no-brainer to sell my 1M for the new gen M3/M4.

If the M2 lives on like this - then we'll all owe Dr. Kai Segler a bottle of Pyrat. And the world will once again be in order.

Looked at M4 at Tokyo show thread and thought, nice car. Opened this thread and have looked at that picture for the past 5 minutes.

I'd ED an M2 in a heartbeat.

Now THAT makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

It's not the M2 as I understand that car has just started its conception. Will it influence the M2?

Its possible because there are key elements such as the oval central intake and three dimensional aerodynamics in the other intakes. Some of the initial M2 features in early design sketches use that theme of the original M3 the E30 in its widened arches but also invokes historic BMW E9 in its modern "Batmobile" extravagance which really accentuates the standard 2er rear wheel arch in how it widens to cover the rear wheels.

The M version of the forthcoming X1 also applies this thinking in early sketches.
It's not the M2. But it shows the thinking of where they intend to really take this car and make it appeal to younger customers.

The journey as ever will generate debate and headlines.
Especially what the power train will be?
That is a headline on its own but when you think of it, it is completely logical.

Curious?
The journey begins soon.

I agree completely.

the 2-series is a smaller car than the M4 and will weigh a little less. If BMW uses some of the lightweight materials/weight savings that the M4 impliments, then this race car should be a couple hundred pounds lighter still (approximately 3,000lbs).

HP wise - we all know the M3/4 will definitely fit into the 2-series since it's an inline 6 turbo, but the cost may be too high for them to use it.
In all honesty, I do race a 335 and a Z4 and having a ton of HP isn't necessarily needed. What a privateer really wants is longevity and cost effectiveness. It costs a ton of money to go racing.

An example is we raced at Mid-Ohio in the BMWCCA Endurance Series, which is a 4 hour race. We had a 6 hour tow to get to the track. When all is said and done with preventative maintenance on the car, fuel, tires, brakes, fool, lodging etc. it ended up costing us about $4000.
Engine maintenance was oil change and spark plugs. We have Dinan software, intercooler and full exhaust and that's it. We're pushing about 400hp in a car that weighs 3300lbs (yes, the 335 is HEAVY). We are one of the quickest cars in the straight line (even quicker than the heavily modified e46 M3s we race against - aero slows them down).

That being said - if they come out with a version as shown in the pics with only a slight hp bump from the M235i - this will be my next car!

This will probably be bmw's testing ground for the M2.

IMO I think the M2 will weigh around 3100, and feature a 340hp 2.0 I-4.

M2 will equal the scalpal, handling above power

M5/6 are the hammers, power/acceleration above handling

M3/4 equals the perfect blend of the two...

Nice move from BMW. It is strange that this car is a good track day car with a straight 6 but that the M2 need a 4cyl to be light enough to be a good track car....

M2 gets a 6 cil turbo mark my words.

Look at maintance of the amg 4 cil. It s pushing on the limit lot of turbo lag. bmw M will not bring such an engine in their ///M Lineup!

Because this car is based on a 235i, it has an I6. BMW M2 will be an even better track car, with a street version of the P48 (itself a race version of the N48, itself based on the new modular block that starts in the i8 codename N38), the I4 that will be found in the M4 DTM.

Yes. I believe it was Scott26 who first used it as his Avatar and then later he posted the pics. I in turn (saved and later)posted them in the 1M development thread here...

"We had initially toyed with the idea of a 1M when we were conceiving the Coupe and did work with evaluation models then using the engine from the E46 and the upgraded E46 CSL engine but it proved to be too heavy for the car."

That passage is just torture.

Man, this is so sick! I've changed my mind quite a bit on the M2. I don't particularly care if it's any faster than the 1M, to be honest. My 135i was plenty fast in terms of acceleration. It was certainly faster than I needed on the street. What I really want is a car that engages you. I want lightning quick turn-in with strong on-center feel, and rock solid feedback through the wheel. I want to feel the paint when I pass over the threshold of an intersection!

Well if they go this way they will create a slightly better track car than a 6cyl powered M2. But a much worst car everywere else.
