This is fantastic. I just tried it out on my 228i (non-tech package), worked as described. I will try it again tomorrow at the track.

Shame on BMW for making it this hard to get temp data on the car. That's really pathetic. I'm going to be forking out for a gauge setup to fix that "oversight".
1).To OP: Is there a way to pre-set that in one of the store buttons?

2). To all: Is there a good gauge set-up out there? I had frigging gauges on my X3 28i and not M235xi??

I have no personal experience with it but I've seen this in lots of cars on these forums.

Actually, you don't even have to do the ignition thing (at least on my car). You just press the miles reset button when the car is running until the menu comes on and enter the code. I did it on the road on my way to work this morning.

I've gone this route, which is effectively free if you have an old android or iPhone laying around.

It's ridiculously easy. For Android phones:

1. order a bluetooth obd2 adapter. I bought this one. Note that the price goes up and down, $10 is the lowest I've seen on Amazon. There are a billion other ones for sale on eBay as well, some for under $5.

2. plug it into your OBD2 port, under the dash on the left.

3. download and install Torque Pro here. Note that there's a free version with limited options if you just want to try out the basics

4. pair the OBD2 adapter with your phone

5. Enjoy!

If you have an iPhone, you'll need a wifi adapter, not the bluetooth (apple keeps a tight reign on what manufacturers it'll allow to be paired to bluetooth devices, and these cheap OBD2 adapters from China aren't on the list). Ultimately I decided that I liked Torque on Android better mainly because of bluetooth, but the iPhone app isn't bad.

iPhone instructions:
1. order a wifi obd2 adapter. I bought this one here

2. plug into your OBD2 port under the dash on the left

3. download and install DashCommand here on your iPhone.

4. in iPhone settings, switch the wifi network to the OBD2 adapter (it should just show up).

5. Enjoy!

Imagine if there was an after market Bluetooth HUD with Torque Pro software on it.

One other trick I've found I have to do (and it may just be phone dependent): when I stop the car, I leave the Torque app (just go back to the home screen). When you get back in the car, start Torque again.

If you don't leave the app, when you next start up the car I've found that on my phone, it won't automatically re-connect to bluetooth. Leaving and restarting the app fixes that.

Your mileage may vary.

Hey Monoblock, do you have oil temp working? It looks like it in the picture.
Just wanted to verify you do have it working and are using Torque Pro and the isaddle?
Thanks!

But now it's good to check how my auxiliary heater is working
You can change it in the iDrive. Go to UNIT and change it.

This secret menu is pretty cool but my temps are displayed in Celsius as well. All my units in the iDrive are set to Fahrenheit. Does anybody know how to change that? Also there are a whole bunch of things in this secret menu that I am too chicken to experiment with. Does anybody know what each does?
Thanks in advance.

I gotta ask, has anyone who regularly tracks their car or drives in an extremely spirited fashion in high ambient temps ever had their car overheat and have a warning light come on? Because yes, I understand having the extra data is important to some people, but I wonder if BMW opted to leave out a gauge because it just might not be an issue to begin with if the cooling systems are engineered properly.
