As a (former) WRX owner myself, it is one of the few things we get to complain about

Interested that just about every M235i that has been tested had the auto box...very deliberate.

Yep. There's a reason that the EJ architecture has not produced more than 300hp safely since 2002. It's maxed out. Lubrication in corners at high RPM is a major problem that only intensifies with these piggyback OTS tunes. My friends and I often buy them with blown rings and flip them. They are very easy to fix and extremely rudimentary and simplistic in design. But they blow up quite often, especially Stage 2's.
that's some good insight right there. I may never consider STI or even a WRX, these cars are still 8K cheaper. For people who don't know much, the STI is a cheaper car to step into the game.

There is at least one from Auto Bild with a manual M235i. Here is the recent thread about it:

People buy cars for different reasons, everyone had different priorities (just look how varied the options people choose are!)

Sadly car forums have become a world of people justifying their own purchasing decisions.

I couldn't care less if some blokes I have never met, that will never likely actually own any of these cars rate my car top of the pile or dead last not scoring a single point on their own made up points table…

I'm a 30yr old bloke that wants a classy coupe, not a rally rep with gold wheels and a massive tea tray stuck to the boot.

I also value an engine's character and delivery over outright power or 0-60 times. This makes the Merc a no go for me. As does the fact I can't have a manual box.

Those two cars wouldn't make my short list just down to what is important to me, which is all I really care about

You should also read what is actually AWD and how it works.
When four wheels are moving you have two more wheels with traction, you do the math and see how is that better than a RWD, especially with a system that is capable to transfer properly the power.
Wheels don't need to be powered to be moving. I fail to see how that matters unless accelerating in which case AWD certainly does help.

Also in Subaru you don't have 3-times-blink turn indicator which makes changing lanes a chore. Moreover the gas pedal is top-hinged causing difficulty in consistent throttle control (translation: your shifting is not so smooth)

And if you look at Subaru specsheet the car has surprisingly low ground clearance at only 125mm (compared to BMW's 130mm). This means that in winter it will double as a snow plow: 4WD notwithstanding. At least the previous Subaru STI had 150mm ground clearance, what are they trying to achieve with the new one ?

Subaru looks good in magazine ads until you start analyzing it in detail and then the magic bubble bursts. That car has some serious ergonomic and functional deficiency even compared to lower-specs BMW like my 128i. In short: STI feels like a step down from what we take for granted. The new M235i doesn't because it only improves and builds on things that make BMW, well, a BMW.

This AutoBild test has all the cars I am comparing: it would be really nice if a US mag put together a similar test once they are all available in the US...
