So having said all of that, and by MT standards of the car not being as fun to drive....you think that warrants about a $13k price difference compared to the M235i as tested when you load it up? If you think it does, then I respect your opinion. For me however, if I were to load this up and see a $60k price tag, I would shop around and see what else is out there.

Again, I'm sure some people will not see it that way.
I just think by virtue of being a full-blown AMG, the CLA45 is going to command a higher price.

It was fitted with the optional Recaro racing seats, etc. It had some technological features and other creature comforts that the other cars lacked.

From a cost perspective, it really shouldn't have been included in this comparison.

I think the M235i is a great value but if you load up a CLA45, you are flat-out getting some things you can't in the BMW.

Makes sense.
So stats mean everything?

No they apparently didn't mean much here.

I re-read my post and didn't see anywhere where I said that "stats mean everything." I guess you were just trying to put words in my mouth?

CLA45 isn't my cup of tea though anyway. Prefer RWD cars. I've always been a fan of the M235i, especially after learning that there is a way to check the oil temperature.

0.25 seconds separates these three on the Streets of Willow course.
That's nothing.

I would love to see the same comparison but on Top Gear, or /Drive where the manufacturers don't have their stinking feet in the suggestion box.

I feel bad for MB. Well not really, but honestly, how can you load up that car and justify spending $60k when only a few thousand more can get you an M3 with Nav-standard, Bi-xenon-standard, heated seats-standard. I just think MB is over charging for what you're getting here, but that's just me. I'm sure some people are not going to feel that way.

Agreed, somehow MB believes the CLA competes with the 3 series. Granted, if yo look at the dimensions they pretty close, but that's about their similitude. In Mexico you get a CLA250 AMG sport for only $3000 USD less than a 328 M Sport. Overpriced.

Wow. AMG gets a lot of hp and low end torque out of a 4 cylinder. That's impressive especially considering that AMG is used to large displacement motors. I say bravo to that.

not quite sure what to make of the styling of the sti.. it sucks they carried over that same disappointing motor.. wouldn't buy that car simply for that reason

would never buy a $60k car with a 4 banger so i won't even waste my time commenting on the merc

m235i wins by default

i agree, i have a 2011 sti and a 2009 m3 and the sti nearly gets the same gas mileage as my m3.

it looses a lot of the milage through the all wheel drive system thats why.

The STI is what it is.

That is, it is indeed a 35K car with a 30K drive train. It is our DD and kids car, and the low rent interior is really quite LOL, especially compares to even the E36 M3. Everything rattles in the STI when the temp goes below 50 degrees. The AC doesn't work if you are in traffic at 100 degree weather (as in, it blows semi cool air. Once you get moving it starts blowing cold air.)

And if you forget to set it to S#, it really feels dog slow, even compares to the E46 M3, which has pretty similar power to weight ratio, which my wife currently drives.

But, it has 4 doors, and was dirt cheap to lease (0 down sub 500 bucks sales tax included a month with 15K miles a year).

It is a total rattle box, and anyone getting into the cockpit of it after getting out of that of the M235 would get why BMW is a better car.

Well, except the lack of LSD. For slapping an M letter, BMW really should put an LSD in it.

So, BMW has nothing to worry about.

i agree, my 2011 sti rattles like hell, interior isn't anything great, it actually looks rather cheap, but then again, i bought it just for the AWD, 6speed, and Turbo…

when I'm feeling baller, i just take my e92 m3 out, lol

I actually quite like the new WRX and STI. Not ashamed that it won really, it's less expensive and has the performance. This was a performance car test after all...

The CLA on the opposite end is a laughing stock. It's over styled to the point that it's just plain ugly. It reminds me of a German version of a riced out honda civic. Crappy styling loaded with aggressive looks that try to make it look better. The front overhang is terrible, the back droops down like its melting, and the belt line is way too high. Not only that but it's an AMG car based on a fwd platform... Yuck. Oh and forget about getting one in a proper manual transmission.

The bmw is the far better product for driving pleasure. It's nearly as quick, (and this isn't even a full fledged ///M model) it's rwd, you can get it in manual, the styling is classic and proper BMW, the engine and exhaust sound is great, and it's far less expensive.

The BMW is the no brainer against the CLA. If you don't have the money, then that STI is a good choice.

STI might lack in the refinement department but it's a lot of fun to drive and sounds very unique.

You always know it's a Boxer motor coming down the road with that Rollin thunder sound!

I always wondered about the sti it's a 4 cylinder box engine and less luxury. what if and what if the sti comes out with a 6 cyl turbo and some luxury what kind of horse power would that make. Probably 350hp, what ya think?

You guys keep knocking the STI. You say that it rattles? Has anyone driven the '15? So you're speculating. Which out of the 3 is more practical? Can you drive the 235i with 3 inches of snow on the ground? I dont think so. I had a 135i cab and the thing didnt move with 1 inch of snow on the ground. I actually ordered the STi the day after Valentines Day and expecting it end of April.. Did not get the Launch Edition with gold wheels cause its tacky. Got the white limited with smoked wheels. I actually had a WRX before the 135 and I wanted a BMW because of the quality. Hands down quality is superb compared to the Subaru. But the STi is just more practical especially in NY. The BMW just took all bumps hard. I don't know how they even did this comparison. The STi is not even in the same league. Its below. Its a rally machine, not luxury.

Another pointless comparison from MT: An STI VS the germans sports coupes and it won??

Sure, not only it is only a couple of tenths quicker on a particular track, has low rent interior and a looks only teenagers and 20-something boy racers could like... The only thing it has over the german cars is the price (but you get what you paid for).
