We'll be finding out, I have a couple approaches for it.

In the meantime if anyone wants to try it on S55, I can help. I may have to post this in the M2C section as well. (Honestly the 2 M2 sections should be combined to one and the N55 and S55 sections should be the one for engine differences.)
There is an update for the LCI dash (even with mine having been dealer updated December 2018 to iStep F020-18-11-531, was done for the dash fault recall). So happens i've just had some updates done trying to improve TPMS for track and he did other unrelated updates one being the dash, I'm now iStep F020-22-03-522.
Just looking at the post above, OG LCI doesn't have the option to tick 'Shift Point Indicator', it on full-time (I turn off the efficiency stuff).

edit: I just tried Enabled's coding using Bimmercode and got same result as samsamdar, the box/gear suggester disappeared altogether.

I connected to samsamdar's car yesterday and have some info and tester data we'll be looking to try.

His cluster was actually on a newer firmware than mine. Same firmware ID as M2C, so this will likely be possible, pending some tests that I have planned.

Couple notes to add:
- Coded it exactly as mentioned
- Did not turn on the "shift point indicator" in the iDrive settings; didn't want to risk touching it
- M sport displays for the steering and drivetrain still function normally for those that would rather have that display than the consumption meter
Excellent news. Checking or unchecking the box makes no difference. It's forced on.

Well there's a small bit of hope that it would not be the firmware revision!

Any idea if this will ever work on the OG m2 (pre LCI grey back ground cluster)?

I don't see why it wouldn't honestly. The clusters can show gear number just fine, but it'll be a combination of settings that tells the cluster where to get the data for it.

You can bet I'll be trying to figure it out on the pre LCI cluster too.

Then the other lingering question would be is if the M3/M4 is more like the OG M2 (needing a bit more of something) or the M2C/S for it to work.

Enabled you are a coding madman!

Just confirming that your coding parameters worked on my 2021 M2C. Thank you (and all involved) for going through the process and figuring this out.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/19qE...w?usp=drivesdk

It's a nifty feature, much better than the (useless) factory function of suggested gear.

I thought the M3/M4 already shows you the current gear along with the suggested gear. Could be wrong though.

Well we confirmed that it's not related to any instrument cluster differences in OG M2, I just coded the cluster to full M2C, and made those changes, it still didn't show it. Sigh

I'm guessing the data stream is just slightly different from the DME to the cluster. The gear position sensor from transmission to DME is the same part number, so it's not that.

Hopefully you can get it, but good work so far man!

Yesterday I noticed with the changes I described on page 2 that if you check the box for Shift point indicator on, it will show a completely new and improved gear suggestion method. (M2C / M2CS only for now. Still working on OG M2).

It's completely beyond me why it wasn't like this from factory.

This is like my old car and I would prefer it to the stock readout.

To confirm, there would be 3 changes to get to a display like this? SPA_ENABLE,
SPA_IST_GANG_ENABLE, and Shift point indicator?

Yes, this is correct. Actually 2 coding changes and then via idrive:

-Shift point indicator checked on shows current gear and suggested gear smaller
-Shift point indicator checked off shows just current gear and that's it

I think the F8x cluster shows it like that too if I’m not mistaken.

It seems a bit of a hit an miss on F80/82/83 according to that thread too. But yea, something isn't sending the same type of data from the N55 DME for it to work like the S55 dme gear data. I need to look through the tune and define it further to see why.

I dunno, seems off to me — or I’m misinterpreting the photo. Shifting from 3rd to 5th at 27 mph and ~1800 RPM doesn’t seem right.

I believe it's just the factory recommendation for "best gear" (which we all know is comically optimistic). The coding doesn't change the recommended gear parameters, it just displays them along with current gear.

Yeah I assume it is purely for economy suggestions and not at all for anything sporty.

I can easily change the recommendation gear and rpm in the tune (it's different in efficient/eco vs. sport), but my comment was more about the delivery and display of the recommended gear.

Do you think there's a way to change the car's default modes on startup? It drives me nuts that the M2C starts with steering in Sport.
