I would seriously consider the R if it came here in 2014. Had a MkV GTI and liked it overall. I just disliked the torque steer and crappy brakes. The R's AWD will obviously remedy the TS, but don't know about the brakes...

Edit: I read the article and it says that ESC can be fully turned off but "only" on the R Meaning that it still cannot be fully turned off on the GTI as confirmed by top gear |

Reliability
I'm sure it's a great hot hatch. Probably one of the best.
Just beware of the reliability. This is just a personal experience but after owning a e87 120d and e81 123d - Zero issues - i'm having trouble with my two VW Golfs. VW Golf VI 1.6 TDI CR 105PS Variant - Clutch gone at 37.000kms. Door locks stuck on back doors. VW Golf V GTI Edition 30 230PS - Spark Plugs gone at 50.000kms. Squeaking timing chain at 70.000kms. Anti-knock sensors kaput at 75.000kms. (before you say I used lousy fuel, I always use 98RON BP fuel, from pumps who move large volumes of fuel) In 2002 I had a VW Golf IV 1.9 TDI 130PS - Injector-pump failure (1500$), engine mount failure, side windows dove into the doors (yes, both), Cracked exhaust manifolds. I think I'm done with the Golf. Last edited by imported_gear_shift; 12-29-2013 at 10:53 AM.. |

Considering a Golf GTi as an alternative (once they become available in the US). The Golf R seems a step too far and puts the Golf into another price category. Besides, the 4-wheel drive just adds mass, and for most of the time it's a front wheel drive car anyway (until the Haldex clutch detects slip).

If only it would get here before Jan 2015 (and that date is hoping there aren't any added delays)

My dealer (certainly not an icon of knowledge) claims August - September of this year for the start of US R deliveries. Production is already going for the ROW models, and will stay in Germany for the time being since the Pueblo plant isn't setup for Haldex. Getting the Pueblo plant up to speed has been the primary reason for the delay of the US GTI.

I have no reason to doubt that. VW USA tends to get things well after everyone else. I'm first on my dealer's list, and not really in any rush, so early next year would actually work for me.

The R is definitely on my list of cars to test drive but I fear that the weight distribution and higher center of gravity are not going to impress me, but who knows. It should be better than my '08 R32 but I will miss the engine note and exhaust (but not the weight it puts on the front axle)

Interior, specs
On page 16 of the ordering brochure (Volkswagon.UK) there is a picture of the interior of the new Golf R.
On page 38 the specs are available for the Golf R including the weight. I tried to copy these pages for a post, since we were recently talking about these things on the S3, but .... no go with my limited skill set. |

I've owned 2 VW's. A MKV GTI and a MKVI R. They look nice, drive decent and is cheap everywhere else in between. Which is why I made the switch and will not go back.

Not as low as I'd like to have seen, but a huge improvement over the Mk6 and still a similar power to weight as the M235i.
