trade in my E92 M3 for M235i? regret?

Hey 2 addict folks!

I am highly highly thinking to say good bye to my M3 and get a M235i in mineral white. Everyone has being blocking my way and saying keep the M. I know it is a M car but it is getting dated. The S65 doesn't produce the low end torque that I want in city driving. Any thoughts? How is the 8 speed auto? How is the weight? How is the new N55? ( the best N55 available currently? ) I know Chris Harris liked it better than the A/CLA 45's dual clutch box.

I had an M3 with DCT loved it miss it. The M235 is great with all the lowend torque that you could dream of but it's not going to be an M3 and it's not going to have that kick ass DCT with the adjustability of soft or hyper aggressive shifts.

It will definite feel like a downgrade but it is a nice alternative if you have a lot of mileage or you can get out of it and make a few bucks. Otherwise I probably end up keeping the M3 .

The seats in the M3 are much better than the 235 the sound is real even though they do a great job synthesizing the exact sound from the M3 inside the cockpit of the M235. The M3 is definitely the attack vehicle the 235 is definitely a great daily driver with torque galore. I have the same exact engine in my E90 with the MPPK and it's really quite nice. It's definitely more relaxed acceleration than the M3, you don't have to cause as much of a scene when accelerating from 0–60 it just effortlessly flows.

But the look overall feel of an M3 there's no comparison 2 very different vehicles.

I agree. Now, the point to consider that could REALLY help is if we can add M performance exhaust, M suspension, and LSD.

Question is, at what cost/benefit?

But to replace M car with a stock M235? You will have major regret. Guaranteed.

I have 2 M cars and I'm evaluating an M235 at my home over weekend. It's a car for the masses. It's really a spiced up car for your spouse. You cannot compare this car to an M car. And BMW made sure of that. Otherwise why build an M2?

They have to differentiate M from non-M.

I am with you about the low end torque not being there for city driving, especially having to pull out into traffic quickly from a standstill. I had enough hands on with the e92 m3 and at the end of the day I prefer my 335i for city driving. For highway driving the m3 was wonderful but the one thing I do all the time which is switch lanes after being brought to a standstill and really needing that low end power (flooring it to pull out and not get hit in the other lane for not pulling out fast enough), it just wasn't there on the m3. That's probably my main complaint on that car.

Yes there's no dct but I think you will prefer the 235 for LA traffic. I definitely would.

Keep the M3 unless you don't mind a smaller car. It IS small. Small trunk, low roofline. I'm 5'11" and had trouble getting in proper driving position. The back seat..forget about it.

I've owned/own both. I wouldn't trade my new M235i for my old M3. Sure the M3 is slightly faster, but only if you're ringing it out to redline. The 235 handles really well, the throttle, brakes, and steering are very lively and responsive. The steering is quicker and more direct in the 235, maybe the feel isn't as good, but I can't tell driving around town. You can power slide the 235 around turns with ease (thanks to the instant torque). I turned off the traction control this morning and did burnout that was a good 80-100 ft long with both tires spinning the whole way. The bits and pieces that make an M3 special aren't there on the M235i, but you can't tell behind the wheel. The M3 may have slightly better seats and a higher trim level, but the 235 has latest infotainment & navigation technology. For me as a daily driver, I'll take the M235i all day long. It's just funner car to drive on public roads.

I agree with you on the back seat room. I don't for driver seat, at 5' 11" you shouldn't have any trouble getting a good comfortable driving position. I'm 5' 10" and there is plenty of room left to adjust for taller drivers. Maybe you didn't have the seat lowered all of the way or something was blocking the seat?

I am beating myself up over this same decision - I have a mint 2010 E93 - and I love the car, but I don't track the car, it recently came out from under warranty, and I find myself driving my beater pickup around town most days.

Sure I would lose some of the M magic, but pick up gas mileage, lower insurance (maybe?) roll back into bmw's excellent 4 year warranty program and hopefully be out less than 10k on the trade in to the new car..

But that M tho... lol

Do it..!

You'll love the ease of daily driving, there is no need to dip north of 4K rpm to pass, or while in traffic. The acceleration is "funner" too.

You will have to decide of the steering feels is adequate, but the M235i's chassis & ride will be much better.

You will also shed about 300lbs.

I know it is trivial, but I despise the interior of the e90. worst bmw has ever made, imo.

I came from an E92 M DCT to the M235i and wouldn't go back. But I don't put my cars on the race track. The M235i is a better road car, but has less road presence.

My running costs have literally been cut in half and my spine doesn't break every time I hit a pot hole.

Yeah no kidding. I'm 6'6 and it fits me like a glove with a couple of inches of head room to spare. The M235i actually has more front seat headroom than a 4 series.

Since it looks like you tuned your current car, a slight tune on the M235i would make it a rocket faster than the E90/E92 M. It's already faster than an E93 M stock.

Funny how proportion makes a huge difference. I'm 6'2 and in the 228i with manual seats I can get a WAY more comfortable driving position than i can in my E92.
