Replace underseat sub or trunk sub?

Hi, still on my audio setup.
I've gone through a lot of the threads here.

I'm upgrading my speakers to a component probably the focals.
I have a standard hifi.
I'm debating should I replace the under seat subs with focals / match(helix) oem fit
Or go with a trunk sub wit the technic harness to add a sub.

Any thoughts?

I've done both.

I have the H/K system with upgraded under seat subs from BSW, upgraded Bimmertech amp, and added a 10" sub in the rear with custom enclosure from Musicar NW. Definitely sounds much better than stock but I'm still not too happy with it. I think the under seat subs are a waste of time and because of space limitations it's hard to put a decent sub in the trunk if you don't want to lose trunk space.

If you don't care about losing trunk space then the sky's the limit and I would go that direction!

The stock Bose system with 2 10" subs under the seat in my 14 year old Sierra Denali sounds far better than my car, sadly.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm leaning towards a jl audio 10w3v3 in a small enclosure in the back.
If the under seat enclosure is junk no matter what drivers I will put in, it's just gonna be a waste of time so really my question is has anybody managed to replace the under seat and get it right

Thanks!

Please post this in the appropriate subforum that deals with car audio here.

You know about the Technic harness, so you've likely explored that subforum. This question belongs there.

Reported. Thank you!

The mods will move it; I've already put in a request for them to do that. No worries!

I replaced my HK system with Bavsound stage 1 speakers and ghost v2 subs, along with a Bavsound/Bimmertech amp. I have been delighted with this combination.

I do not know how the ghost subs would perform with the factory amp, but my guess is that it might well not be worth replacing the subs if you do not replace the amp as well. With Bavsound, you could always try the stuff and then return it if you do not like it.

Good luck.

I used the Technic harness and built a small fiberglass box fitted with an 8” Kicker Solobaric sub. Amp is a Precision Power i650. Made a world of difference. Will likely go with Bavsound stage 1 just haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

Building the box is a bit of work and time but well worth it. Plan on like a day of car down time to pull the trunk form, then the remainder you can do at your leisure. Took me a few weeks total, but I wasn’t in a hurry.

I have the amp waiting to install but the ghosts make a huge difference even with stock amp.

do you feel you've lost bass response comparing to trunk 10" sub?
hitting low frequency / punch?

thanks

I can't compare the ghost subs with a 10" sub in the trunk, because I haven't heard one in the car. Comparing the Bavsound package to good home systems, I am regularly surprised by how good the Bavsound system is, including its handling of the bass region. There is plenty of bass, and it is accurate as well as punchy.

Of course, a lot depends on what you listen to and your personal preferences. The amp came with a DSP tuning tailored to the speakers and the car, and I have left that alone. I have zeroed out the BMW tone controls. I am fine with the current sound, but I am sure that you could dial in more bass.

I should also point out that I have the latest version of the Ghost subs, version 2. Others on the board have said that this version is better than the original Ghost subs.

Trunk sub install

I was thinking of added a powered trunk subwoofer such as this to my base (hi fi) system where I've swapped all non-sub speakers out for bavsounds. They sound great but lack deep bass.

Rockford Fosgate P300-12 Punch 300 Watt Powered Loaded 12-Inch Subwoofer Enclosure https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007AQ2W6W..._kHD-AbQCMCJJF

It takes both RCA and speaker inputs. Can anyone comment on the best way to get a signal to this sub or recommend a different one?

I just installed the ghost subs under the seats yesterday. Right now I’m still running the stock amp and I’m hesitant to buy the bimmertech amp because of the price point. I didn’t buy this car to enjoy listening to music in... I bought it to replace that thrill and excitement I felt running my Yamaha R1 down the back country roads before my back got too messed up to ride. That being said, I do feel the ghost subs and a little adjusting to the treble and bass and fade made enough of a difference that I was more than happy to spend the 1k on the stage 1 Dinan tune instead. 🙃

Install done

I installed the 12 inch sub I mentioned using the technic pnp add a sub harness. It took about 3 hours and it sounds AMAZING for $300 all in. There's no way the underseat subs could ever sound this good.

I put an 8" Focal in the trunk - biggest they would fit nicely in my convertible - and even that made a huge difference. Granted with amp and enclosure I'm more like $1k all in but worth it to keep a usable trunk.

Which harness did you all use to install the trunk sub?

https://technicpnp.com/product/hifi-...ub-harnessloc/

I'm just confused by the description because it says this:

Please note that this harness is not compatible with Digital/MOST Top HiFi/HK/Logic7 OEM systems

I do have the HK setup and it looks like I just need to find a harness in stock somewhere.

I have the BavSound speakers to replace my HiFi setup and yes I did the Ghost subs.

Huge difference even with the stock amp.

I am going to eventually get the Bimmertech amp when it goes on sale (thing is stupid expensive) and then after that make a final determination on whether or not to get a trunk sub.

Keep an eye on eBay what you want is a Match PP86DSP or even the older 82. You can then get harness and bracket from Bimmertech. I just got one yesterday brand new for $400.

The harness and mounting bracket is $250 so just factor that in as you shop around.

I have a question, I have 2017 BMW 330xi with Hi-Fi, I have upgraded Tweeters, Mids front and Rears and two under seat Subwoofers also installed Match PP86 DSP Amp, I bought all this from Bimmer-tech. I feel I need more bass, can I add Match PP 7S-D Compact trunk Subwoofer and not loosing existing underseat subwoofers?
