I pulled one off and that would be the best way. One clip broke (nothing major though, still holds fine the way they are designed) because the grill isn't entirely open you can't reach some of the clips with your fingers like you can the open part. With the bumper removed you can easily pop them out. They also pop in very easily. I wouldn't recommend taking them out unless the bumper is off.
