RUST OMG !

So in doing my dashcam project I opened up a panel on the passenger door on the dash to run cable and I noticed RUST what ? I had a good look around and saw some more, it does look to be surface rust, I looked on the other side, same location and also some rust, but now as much

car's like 13k doesnt look serious, should I just close the panel and not see it any more LOL

not sure what the part is, can't work out how it rusted and on both sides

thoughts

I wouldn’t worry it’s just surface corrosion not heavy rust

Steel parts are eventually going to rust. You should see the Titanic. j/k

If it bothers you, spray it with some rust inhibitor, it will turn it black and make it less noticeable. 100 years from now it may still be found in a barn with no floorboards.

that was also my concern, as its on both the driver and passenger side it feels weird to be water egress, other steel that I can see with a flashlight isnt effected

but yes thats my concern

Behind the dash doesn’t breath and gets a lot of hot and cold. I think it’s just moisture in the air. I’ve seen many cars have some corrosion behind the dash. If you have a leak you will feel wet on the carpets

Likely due to high humidity like Kernel kurtz says.

Parts like that, which typically never see the light of day. Should have come lightly oiled from the stamping press/pre-assembly. I guess it's an oversight.

txs all, and I appreciate the feedback

and jim, just posting a post just to become a member isn't really cricket,
the point of having a minimum post count is so you contribute

some forums have really strict rules on number of posts, responses and what you get, avatars etc.

really truly, BMW forums are a community, were here to help but you have to put your time in, people are spending time to help others, saving them going to a dealer or an indy.

you could have said something more positive or to the point,

could have even posted, "yep I agree, seen that before" or how about "I didn't know that"

anyway just my 50c's

This is common on all F-series BMW's. The steel mounting for the seat frames and behind the dash rusts within the first 2-3 years. It's nothing to worry about but evidence of too much cost cutting from a 'premium' brand. My F30 was 3 years old with 10,000 miles when I bought it and it's similar to what you've posted here.
