I use the Skosche magnetic mount attached to the left side of my small iDrive screen. I did it this way for a few different reasons.

1. It's just too blazing hot to be blocking the A/C vent using a vent mount like I had been using. Plus the clip portion was scuffing up the vent slats. You can see this in the unmounted picture.

2. It's high up so I don't have to look down at my phone for information.

3. It doesn't block my iDrive screen view at all.

4. I run the iPhone cable up from the plug and around the right side of the screen and around the back to the phone. It stays out of the way and tucks in nicely.

I use the Waze app and have for a number of years. I don't have the Tech package so everything is a simulation phone call for the turn by turn directions. This only works this way with iPhone and not Android phones.

If I were to use it for Nav, like I did in my 06, I simply place it on the ledge in front of the instrument panel. You can still see the enough of the gauges and it stays there nicely. Normally however, it's in the tray in front of the cub holders, pax seat gap, or trunk.

This is the holder I use. I attached a magnetic holder to it from Scosche. The metal plate you need to put between your phone and case does not affect wireless charging FYI.

Edit: the scosche magnetic piece I use is the one two posts above. Can’t recommend it enough

This is the setup I ended up going with :

ProClips mount and a Wizgear magnetic mount

Thanks everyone for the inspiration!

If you pull the center vent you can easily snake that wire to the footwell then armrest. 5 min job.

I just picked up a SCOSCHE Magnetic Mount from Walmart. Doesn't block any vents, controls, cup holders, and doesn't get in way of passenger.

Pretty happy with it so far.

Why not auction cup/mount itd on the back of the nav screen and have it turned to face you? It would look like just an extension of the screen and its nice and highly visible

I've had it 14 months. It ships with an extra piece of double sided tape. The first one gave out after five months (lots of summer heat) and the second one just recently, after nine months. Still no complaints. It's a solid piece. This time I switched to 3M molding tape, so we'll see how it holds up. I'm betting a very long time.

I have a cup holder mounted phone holder that I attached a cordless charger to. Works great with my Galaxy S8 Plus.

For most of us, the cupholder mount is too low and forces the driver to look down and away from the road. That is the beauty of the simple vent mounts: the phone is parallel with the screen. Plus most of them are dirt cheap and they hold the phone well.

Some of use the technology on our "smart" phones to run apps which monitor certain aspects of the car. Kind of tough to see through our pants pockets.

Well, the 3M molding tape started to let the phone sag after less than a week. Back to the drawing board.

Yeah the pro clip is perfect

Bmw just doesn't understand the needs of average drivers, look how long it took them to figure out cupholders.

My ONLY complaint with it is that I wish the wire exited the back vs bottom but even as it sits you've only got 2" of visible wire to deal with. Very clean install.

I have a small tablet dedicated to that purpose when needed, which is very infrequently. There aren't any "aspects" I need to monitor constantly.

Well, that 3M tape held for a whole week. Don't understand, since it's been holding my CF trunk lip spoiler on for the better part of a year. Anyway, I swung into Best Buy and grabbed an iottie magnetic vent mount for $20. I considered the cup holder mounts, but I need something higher up in my field of vision, plus I use the holders. I have it mounted in the lower right corner on the right vent. Love it so far. The phone stays perfectly solid during all types of driving. I do tend to reach around and hold the mount when pulling the phone off it, so it's not as solid as the Burger mount, but that thing was becoming a pain in the ass with the failing adhesives.
