888s why?
I note the 888s seem to be popular on this forum. Where does this come from?
In my experience they are a good (track) tyre but there are better. They do wear really well though, so if you are driving to and from the track they are a good choice. |

Agree there are much better, but people do seem to like them. I think it's a little dated and there are better extreme performance and r comp tires for less money.

They're good and sticky, but it depends on what you want. I'm a lazy bastard, and just use the same tires for everything, so I stick to things that have a 200 TW minimum (personal favorite are the Dunlop Direzzas).
I think Pparana is right, they are good, but tire tech has advanced and there are just better, more durable things out there. I've heard great things about the RE-71's, except that the 200 TW rating is just Bridgestone's opinion, man. Apparently they don't last very long.

my R888s worked well for autox until and for one track day
after the track day (at Chuckwalla), they were useless for autox plenty of tread left, they just "cycled out" I'm going to RE-71Rs for autox and just use my PSSes for the track |

I have Kosei K4R wheels with et42, and I was wondering if anyone has tried mounting Toyo RA-1 in the 255/40/17 size for track use and, if so, is there any rubbing?
I currently run Hankook RS-3 in 245/40/17 (square set-up) without any issues, but I'm looking for more grip. Not more grip in terms of contact patch but in terms of rubber and, to a lesser degree, sidewall stiffness - they don't make RA-1 in 245. If you know of a better R-compound that you can drive to the track, and then some, let me know. |

Yokohama A050s are the best semi slick around imo. I have tried many, not on the beemer. Sticky, quick and wear really well. I thought the 888 thing might be specific to BMWs due to the weight/alignment or something.

That's what I've heard but I think they might only be available in Japan and Australia.

You should be fine with 4mm less poke. By the way, you do know you can adjust camber on the rear without any aftermarket parts, right?
