It is absolutely crazy how bad Dinan's tunes are!! I mean 2k and this happens not once but twice!!! I was set for Dinan, but who in their right mind would do this tune over a JB or even just a BMS Stage 1 which has way better numbers with many many dynos posted!

People do it because of the 'name' and 'warranty'. There is absolutely NO OTHER REASON to pay that much for their unit. The technology is a piggyback just like every tuning solution that they discredit as being lesser then theirs.

In my opinion, the warranty is useless. Why? Because people have been pushing more power on the same motor for a long period of time and rarely (and I only say rarely but I have NEVER read of a component failure from something like a BMS Stage 1) does something ever break. Dinan offers a tuning solution that, at best, provides half the power gain of existing tunes and so Dinan knows there is a VERY small likelihood that something will ever go wrong ANYWAY.

More so.. the 'warranty' policy just steps in to give the user reassurance that they have some 'coverage' if something goes wrong because the Dinan unit will effectively void BMW's drivetrain warranty. Some people understand this and some don't. Dinan and BMW are no longer in the same relationship as they were years ago and this is where Dinan got the name it aggressively uses now to sell its products.

Again, this is all in my opinion based on my observations, research and experience. Does the Dinan unit present itself better? Sure.. there is no doubting that it is 'cleaner' and hey, your dealer will even put it on for you (and they will install a JB4 if you want them to also). Is it worth $2,000 for a Dinan Stage 1 and most likely $2,500 for a Dinan Stage 2 (probably equivalent power to a BMS Stage 1 for $375)? Not to me.

I really don't understand why people still have faith in Dinan. They are the biggest rip off with no substantial gains compared to other tuning options. When speaking of things such as warranty, I had JB4 on my cpo 335 for 2 years and would just take the JB4 out for service and never once got a warranty claim denied. JB4 is a proven tune and is just as safe for our motors as the Dinan tune so why not just save $1,500 for other bolt on parts?

Did you have to splice wires on your 335i JB4 setup? Did it worked well with 91 octane?

Great post Delnari
I have recommended aFe Scorcher and RaceChip to my friends, I couldn't recommend BMS before recommending the aFe or RC.
It makes sense why my RaceChip at medium-high setting with no mods 28i engine can now match the 35i (w/ K&N drop-in) on a 0-60 run.. Will be testing 0-100 soon against my friends 35i.

ROBNYC Would you mind sharing with me your experience with the RaceChip tuning? I'm considering that one for my M235i, wondering if getting the Pro2 or Ultimate.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

My experience has been great so far the past month, increasing every 30-60 miles on each setting, learning a lot from most experienced RaceChip users which are the F15 guys, seeing how more ppl are getting onboard and liking it.
Any specific question ?

I went with Ultimate because N20 engine is newer and its the only available plus I was going to get ultimate anyways. The price difference with our favorite USA Dealer is very small. Plus Ultimate can be transfered to your next vehicle too.

Thank you ROBNYC for your reply and for sharing your experience. To be honest, your video provoked me to go with RaceChip hehe, I was considering Manhart but their price is a high as DINAN and I lost interest in DINAN for all that I've read in here. And Manhart, not only the price but I don't have any strong background, nor videos about their piggy back for the M235i, no dyno sheet either.

So, after reading your race experience vs the X3 35i, I went to look for more RaceChip's videos on youtube, man, I found a 320i F30 with RaceChip which measured its 0-60 times with a P2 and I was like "nooo way, I gotta get this for my F22", so I made my decision and purchased the Ultimate which states that it takes the M235i to 379HP and 394lb/ft TQ. I will have to wait like 2 weeks since it is shipped directly from Germany.

No better motivation to go with a piggy back that has specific dyno results for the M235i, videos all over youtube (like yours) and a reasonable price, in addition of the detailed information about the components of the box, video installation guidance, etc. I hope I get good results. I'll be taking my car to the dyno soon, so I can see my numbers before and after the RaceChip.

Questions? Yeah, I have some for you if you have the time:

- Are you getting better/same/worse gas mileage with the RaceChip?
- Experienced any CEL errors during this time you've been using the unit?
- Did you have to change settings on the unit to get the numbers RaceChip offered for your X3 or was it plug, play and get the performance/numbers they said the X3 gets with the Ultimate?

I thank you , again, for your response. Cheers!!!

-Better MPG for future even at the higher settings, my stock car would be much lower the way I been driving it and testing haha.
-Haven't seen CEL or errors yet, but if I do that means I have reached over my maximum and I should drop down 2 settings (maximum safe setting)
-RaceChip comes in a Optimal balance performance/mpg improvement stock, you can test that setting for 30-50 miles or 24-48hrs in different modes before you increase to the next.
- I havent dyno'ed my car but I am testing my 0-60, 60-100 myself but also most importantly I have tested 0-60, 20-70 against my friend who has E90 335 and X3 35i.. But each engine and environment will react differently, you might reach a higher setting on the chip than I can (vice versa)

I just received my OBDLink and running Dash Command will be checking my 0-60, 60-100, HP/TQ, and all different types of temperatures and see the % things are running at.

A million thanks Rob for replying back and for your help to get a better price! Now I'm anxious to get my Ultimate RaceChip to install it immediately!!

I appreciate your recommendations about setting up the unit, I think I will do just as you did, trying it with factory settings and then some test with higher modes.

Have a great weekend man

The numbers all vary due to octane, weather, car/engine tolerance but should be very close to this number also 374hp/395 is the maximum but doesn't mean the best for your car.
I'd be happy with 330-340 in your car (since its smaller)
I drove the X3 35i stock and wow thats what lead me to buying the RaceChip

No splicing required on the n54 it was plug and play.. Also I used it on 93 but it will work fine on 91 because BMS is located in Cali which only has 91 so thats what they do all their testing on.

So I am contemplating buying an m235i from a Newport Beach dealership that is also a Dinan Dealership as well. What I hearing is that I shouldn't get the Dinan box period, any reason why besides price???

If Dinan keeps their promise for Stage 2 and intake, then there is no other reason why not.
