Another launch control thread

Yes, this is another one...

I am having an issue with the launch control to activate. In fact, I still have not been able to have it activate once. My car has nearly 6,200 KM's ( 3800 miles)

Here is what I've done...

Drove for nearly 20 minutes in 80*F weather / Drove for 10 minutes in 80*F weather.

Ensure steering wheel is dead straight

Sport + or regular sport mode than turn off traction control.

Toss paddle to manual shift mode

Step on brake, hard.

Step on gas, firmly.

I get nothing... Just tons of wheel spin, the RPM's flaring to 6-7k

I have JB4 stage 2 - could this be causing any issue?

Couple things that might be interfering (besides JB4, which I don't know anything about):

Move shifter left to Sport shift mode (S1, S2, etc.) but do not use paddles to engage Manual Shift mode (M1, M2, etc.)

When you step on the gas, make sure you press all the way down past the kickdown button. Do it fast, and the engine doesn't have time to rev past the launch hold RPM. I Launch Mode doesn't activate unless the kickdown button is down, so if you try to feather the throttle, you'll end up revving up past 3.5k and the wheels could start spinning.

Ya... you don't really need neither sport nor sport+

hit DTC button once
shift lever to the left to (DS mode not manual) don't touch paddles
foot on the brake all the way
foot on the throttle activating kickdown

and you should see the launch control notice on the cluster, release the brake within 5 secs and off you go....

you need to at least have driven 6 miles and oil be at temperature and I think you need to be over 2000miles on your car

Yup, doing all of that. I don't engage paddles, I send the shifter to the left.

I push the throttle down quite quick, almost how you ease into a WoT - not absolute mash but you throttle down within .5 seconds.

You have to mash. There is a kickdown trigger at the end of the throttle that needs to be depressed.

Didn't know I had to be over 2000 miles. Prob why it didn't work for me.

Got it to work. Really don't be scared to mash the pedal quickly to the ground than you will see the flag appear and enjoy the ride!

Bear in mind that it's limited to 100 launches before it will disable this function.

Any idea if it counts if you abort the launch... meaning don't release the brake and let off the throttle ?

Hi Killramos, this was said during my sales training last May when we were talking about the sports automatic at BMW Belgium-Luxembourg. Someone will have to test it then (I have used it about 5 times in 2 months but I don't do drags, only trackdays.)

Interesting... so you only get wheel spin in sport+ ?

that could explain it... as launching in sport+ you would have stiffer suspension setting so it will bounce more and prone to wheel spin while on softer suspension it would bounce less and suspension would absorb it

I haven't done enough launches in controlled settings to be able to say for sure Sport+ = wheelspin. It could very easily have just been the tarmac properties at that particular location.
