"Let clutch cool"
Guys,
Once again, I'm getting a sign in the dash that reads, "let clutch cool." Anyone have any idea what the deal is?? I'm really beginning to get ticked off. Should I call BMW NA?

Take a picture of it and / or a video to show the dealer.

That of course implies you have a clutch temperature sensor, which seems unlikely (and I can't find one on realoem). Maybe there is a set of criteria from other inputs that add up to the computer suspecting the clutch is overheating.
What are the conditions when you receive it? Do you have any noticeable slipping? Maybe some other sensors are giving a screwy reading and the computer is getting confused? |

I was going to ask the same thing; what was going on when that message popped up? After it did, did it disappear after letting it cool for some time, does it show up when you first start the car...?

I have no answer for you but I did google "let clutch cool" and others with other BMW models have gotten the same message in their manual trans BMWs. Weird....

I've tracked my manual, driven very hard at times and never, ever got that message, mind you I have an "older" e90, but it has the same n55, stage 2 ppk and PE that's installed on the m235. I suspect the exact or very similar drive train.

I had a manual e90 as well and never had the issue.
I'm going to get the car to BMW in the next couple of days and have them run a software test.

If your not getting a burning rubber smell your probably not hurting it. I've owned 8-10 manual BMW's and never had an issue but burned up the clutch on a 2010 Mini Clubman S. My Mini smelt like I had a burning tire in the back seat and then over the next week all hell broke loose. New clutch at 24,000 miles then I found our it was a real weak point on them and they upgrade them about 2 years later.

The light went off yesterday so I didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of having to bring the car to the service center.
Then tonight, on my commute home, the light turned back on. I'm not getting any burning rubber smell, but it's certainly not a message that's comforting.

How could anyone think that a warning like that is OK or normal? Call the dealer. Have them figure it out. Drive a loaner while they fix it.

Do you rest your left foot on the clutch or drive in heavy traffic? Could be clutch slipping combined with a bad takeup point so that its partially engaged at all times.

I always rest my foot on the clutch, but I've been doing that for years.
Going to the service center on Tuesday morning, so hopefully I can get to the bottom of this.

Try driving for a while with your foot off the clutch unless in the process of a shift, and see if the message ever returns. I am close to positive that BMW designed the car with the expectation that the clutch pedal would have zero pressure when a shift is not occurring. There are many listings on Google as sources for the potential harm of this practice. Here is just one of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riding_...ing_the_clutch |

Agreed - my guess is that your foot resting there is some sort of minimal engagement of the clutch - maybe try resting it on the dead pedal and see if the warning goes away

I wish I had gotten that warning. One day in terrible snow the only way I got any traction was to declutch in 3rd gear and kind of ride the clutch. The car moved but I didn't realize at the time that basically I was asking the clutch to modulate 2-300HP and basically put that amount of heat into it. Yes it smelled like a tire was burning in the back seat. Also its a weird feeling that anything could burn in that bitter snowy cold. I lost a clutch and in trying to get the car to move destroyed the 3rd gear synchro. This was a 2007 335i.

So you guys never rest your foot on the clutch while your driving?
Can the weight of your foot be enough to engage the clutch??
