I prefer the 235 vs the CLA. I think the CLA has some good and bad esthetics; looks good from the front but the rear end is awful. Its even worse from the side profile. I like the interior of CLA but equally like the 235 as well.

For an extra 4k over the BMW you can get a hand built engine and a true AMG badge. The Cla design has really grown on me, and the car has a very fluid shape vs the bimmers vanilla coupe design, it's more "exciting". I'm cross shopping both cars and leaning towards the BMW mostly due to the straight 6 and rwd. Having said that, I'm sure the Amg will feel more special every day of the year that you're not on the track.

These two cars couldn't be more different. Just due to dimensions and price, it's considered class competitors, but coupe vs sedan, awd vs rwd, 8speed auto vs dct, 6 cylinder vs 4 cylinder. Each has pro's and cons, but I honestly feel they are two very different cars which ultimately boils down to personal preference and needs. For me, I much prefer the looks and drivetrain of the M235i. But all respect to MB, they built a very interesting small performance sedan.

The Benz is fugly. They can keep the extra 33Hp, $4350, AWD and 121lbs. With the money saved and put back into the 2, It would mop up the AMG and still have $ to spare.

The $4k price difference is very deceiving.
The difference increases quite a bit more as you add options. For instance the CLA45 Recaros in leather is a $3,450 option. A fully loaded CLA45 is $68k+. A fully loaded M235i won't be anywhere near that. |

The Merc is eccentually a 2 door coupe, the car magazines say an adult can not ride in the back due to the sloping roof.

I actually saw one without knowing which car it was and thought it was a more expensive car than a c class. I really like the design except for the back and the interior is very very cool so I don't think they got it wrong.

Mercedes has better seats and pedals (and I also like the CF trim)... other than that, it's the BMW by a mile on design alone. The Mercedes nose/tail/profile are all awkward. The BMW is more conservative but in the right way. Easy to mod it to make it more aggressive looking where the Merc is impossible to make it look good (IMO).

I saw a CLA 45 in person the other day and it really looked special. It was white with black accents and stands out among other cars. The BMW M235 just looks any other generic bimmer. I think BMW is playing very safe in design of their cars with the 3/4 series as incremental improvements over the E 9x lines. Which I guess is ok for many people, but leaves the door wide open for Audi and MB to roll out bolder designs and capture market share. My prediction is that the CLA will sell like crazy, much more than a comparable bimmer..

So we have to accept right out of the gate that this comparison isn't necessarily about raw performance, because we're comparing dissimilar cars with respect to their performance trim. However, we can get a feel for how the (hopefully) upcoming M2 will compare to the CLA45 in terms of appearance. IMO, it compares very favorably. The CLA design has some merits (some great lines), but it has some real warts too. What's with the MASSIVE overhangs? Bleh. If you only care about how a car performs, then Ford Mustang GT owners are sitting back and laughing at both of us. There are cars that outperform both the CLA45 AMG and the M235i, and they do it at a lower price point. Caring about the appearance of your car isn't some kind of enthusiast blasphemy.

Being a BMW guy and as excited as I am to see the M235i, were I in the market for a weekend fun/track car, I'd choose the M235i. However, I really do like the CLA45 AMG.
I love the feel of the BMW I6. I prefer the interior of BMW to Mercedes. The CLA interior looks very nice, the CF trim is gorgeous, the seats are amazing, and I like the sort of retro look. As others, though, it's just too busy with all the buttons. BMW wins this one for me. Until the new Benzes, BMW was technologically more advanced. Now, I'm not sure. Benz looks like they just made some light-years leaps with their tech offerings. Google with street view, etc. So tech wise with the newest cars I'd say it's almost a wash. Engine wise, the CLA45 is pretty revolutionary. When I saw it's a 4-banger I did 2 double takes -- wow! So I hope that in life it is as exciting as it is on paper. A buddy of mine has a CLA45 on order, should be seeing it in less than 2 months, so I will have to convince him to let me drive it, hehe. I've seen quite a few CLA's now on the street and that little car has a ton of road presence. Particularly in white. Very classy and nice looking car that defies it's $29k entry point price tag. The AMG, of course, will look that much better! However I still prefer the new 2-series looks, hands down. So all in all, while I cant fault the CLA45 really for anything except a busy interior, my vote would go to the M235i (or M2 if one comes out) because I'm a BMW guy at heart and I miss my E46 every time I see one on the roads, which is often And the new 2-series generally reminds me of the E46 and gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling about BMW. |

The automotive press are a funny bunch. I get the sense that they like to try and manipulate auto manufacturers through their comments. Sometimes their kind when they should be harsh, and sometimes their harsh when they should be kind. Often, the flip-flop as a car ages. I realize that as time progresses, the context in which a car is judged changes, but I can't help but get the feeling that there is a bit of goading going on. I can't figure out whether the CLA45 really does have bad turbo lag, but the press are so excited about the amount of car provided for the price that they soft-pitch the turbo lag problems. I really want to see for myself, because I have serious reservations about the ability of twin-scroll to mitigate the lag effects of that much boost.

I'll take the more aggressive looks of CLA45 AMG over the M235i. Hopefully the M2 will match the aggression of CLA45 AMG or better yet one up it. Specially considering that the BMW site has more shrunken pics of CLA45 AMG posted while stretching out the M235i pics.......lol

More power, more advanced engine, 4 wheel drive for better traction, and an AMG badge? Against what? "Almost" M2? Please, Merc hands down. Sorry |
