There's no official word on production numbers. The general thought is that plant at Leipzig (where the M2 will be produced) has limited capacity and is already running pretty hard. The production number 10k/year is being thrown around, I think based on some rumors, but it could also be 10k for the three year production run. No one knows yet, because we don't have an official word from BMW.

Regardless, availability is likely to be very thin during the first 6 months, so if you have intentions of buying one, it's best to get on a list. Just do your due diligence and make sure you get a receipt that says "refundable" for your deposit.

Let's be honest, no other BMW is ever going to sound like that again. Take it or leave it.

Actually, they did exactly that. The Cayman GT4 uses the 991 Carrera S engine.

I'm not saying it should have the S55. I'm saying it should have an S-motor, like every other M-car in history except the 1M and the M2. BMW have set a clear pattern here. Their entry level M car isn't "whole".
"Half an M-car" and yet the 1M was much more highly praised than any current M car, and every m car that was out around the time the 1m was.

Complaining about a letter in an engine code, how ridiculous.

It's going to be a modified N55, I'm sure it will suit the car great. They're going to modify it so it works well with their goal.

All I see are a bunch of self justifying M3/4 owners trying to convince themselves that the M2 is just a sub par car to keep themselves happy.
JB4 and I'm happy....

Not to mention if it's as reliable and easy to maintain as the actual N55 engine I will gladly take one

Indeed, the 1M was embraced by the vast majority of the press, but the engine always required a footnote. I've said numerous times that the 1M was, overall, a great car. Plenty of people complained that it didn't have a "proper" M-car engine, but those people were shut down with the argument that the 1M was a parts bin car, born in engineering, and built in a rush. This time we were told that the M2 was being properly developed and that there would be no shortcuts taken. Ha!

Now there's another line of people that stretches around the globe, ready to make BMW's argument for them. This time it's economics.

Your last statement is a gross mischaracterization of my complaint. It's obvious to any rational person that simply putting an "S" in the engine code isn't what I'm talking about. I've expended far more energy describing the qualities of BMW S-engines than I have fawning over labels. An "S" code is the language BMW uses to describe their best engines. It is a proxy for the underlying values. If you think my desires are so empty as to be satisfied by simply swapping out the engine code, then you haven't been paying attention.

Yes I know. But doesn't change the fact that it's not quite the same.

True. I've come to grips with that though. BMW can't do anything about environmental regulations.

No sir - I traded it in (early lease termination) when I bought the Cayman.

I think my problem with the 235 was unrealistic expectations - I bought into the hype about it being faster than the 1M on certain tracks, etc. - and it was just simply not as enjoyable as my regular 135s, much less a 1M. The suspension was probably the worst aspect of the car - it was much too soft for my liking.

I think that's the main reason that the M2 will be so good - it is going to be an M3 from the belt line down, and I came very close to getting an F80 before I starting looking at dedicated sports cars. If I ever need a back seat, the F80 is what I will get (or its successor). It is an awesome car...

With that being said, the 2er held its respective value reasonably well, and I wasn't much upside down on it when finalizing the deal - I say much in a relative manner.
Did you get crushed when you traded in? How did you structure the deal? Just buy out the remaining payments in one swoop?

one, i know its not easy nor cheap. there was sarcasm. that still wouldn't be possible in 10 years. and i might not be old enough to legally 'drive' but private land and track days are a wonderful thing, and having been driver in both an e92 and f80, if this n55 actually received a second turbo and as flat a torque curve as the f80 even with less power it may still match the performance of its bigger brother due to less weight.

and i personally prefer the f80's sound, only because a straight 6 is a bmw tradition.
