Has anyone confirmed that the M-performance 235 LSD will not work on the 228?

My biggest issue with the 235 is the upcoming M2. Also for me personally the M3 conflicts with it. 228 priced out the way I like it at $38k MSRP so less if negoiated or euro delivered does not have much competition at that price. 235 is a great car and for me the smoothness of the I6 make it very tempting.

I realize this thread is getting pretty off-topic to answer OP's question....:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/news/76530...-dyno-numbers/

These guys dyno'd 233HP to the wheel. BMW advertises 240HP for a 228i; Advertised HP ratings are usually crank I believe. 15%-20% loss from crank to wheel HP conversion is pretty standard, so "guesstimated" crank HP is around 275HP - 290HP

So yes, BMW did underrate their advertised HP by about 35HP - 50HP

EDIT: Just as a reference, EAS dyno'd a M235i at 307WHP, so crank HP rating is about 360HP - 385HP

This is like the recent Geico commercials:

"Did you know BMW underrates their horsepower ratings?"

"Everybody knows that."

"Well, did you know that owls really aren't that wise?"

...

Maybe the real question should be: does BMW understate their HP numbers more than other manufacturers?

MikeG12, I also tested the Audi A3 and preferred the BMW 228i.

It's thought that Audi's been underrating their new engines like the supercharged 3.0 V6 and the turbo 4.0 V8. Not sure if it's to the same degree as BMW though. Two past cars that I've owned, the Jaguar XFR and Mercedes C63 appeared to be showing higher wHP ratings on the dyno than their crank numbers would suggest too. With the XFR it was rated at 510 and dynos seemed to suggest 540-550, and the C63 was rated at 482 and dynos seemed to suggest 500-510. I wonder if along with a bit of underrating, the transmissions aren't as inefficient as they used to be. That could account for higher wHP ratings for a given crank rating.

Actually, Audi has been known for understating 0-60 performance and HP for some time.

I'm leaving Germany in a month or so to head back to the US (military). I recently traded in my 2011 X6M for a 228i. Go ahead and call me a dumbass but I needed to save some money and what better way to save money than with the insurance agent and the gas pump.

I'm going from 12.7 mpg to almost 30 mpg with the switch. And as everyone has already stated, the 228i is a quick little thing! Basically a second slower to 60 with more than double the gas mileage.

Now the 228i doesn't handle nearly as awesome as my previous M3 or the X6M which is to be expected. Sacrifices had to be made. But for bang for your buck, the 228i provides a sporty ride with a little bit of the fun factor.

I love going to the gas station now though...
I am currently leaving in Germany and judging by fuel prices I agree that you are saving some serious cash

How do you like the 2 series against your M3? I am cross-shopping between a used 2008/2009 M3 and a 2015 2 Series (only 220i available back in Mexico.. I will come back soon).

Thanks!
