Steering malfunction

Hey guys, well it's a sad and inconvenient day. I just finished a nice weekend up in the mountains and literally as I went to start the car to leave I get a "steering malfunction". It's very hard to turn the wheel and feels as if there is no power steering at all. IDrive says to drive moderately and to contact a service center. The drive train works just fine as I'm able to move forward and reverse. When power steering goes out I understand the faster you drive the easier it is to turn the wheel. Unfortunately it's a little too risky to get down the mountain and I don't want to make the situation worse.. My car is being towed to the nearest bmw, which isn't close. Any insight on this? Fuse to be reset? Wish me luck

Edit: I have variable steering with adaptive suspension

WOW, first time I've heard of this one. BMW will likely make it a priority investigation. Can't have that happening at 80mph on the highway !

Wow power steering failure.
I had this happen once in my old e46. The hydraulic power steering pump shaft broke in half!

Fortunately these type of failures usually happened at low speeds when the required turning effort is at its highest.

The only thing I would suggest is trying to see if the power steering reservoir is still full. Could possibly be a leaking hose or crack. Had this happen on my Acura.

F22 uses electric power steering. No fluid.

Pretty sure it happened to a C/D long term 328i a few years back. They said the dealer replaced the entire steering rack, and that out of warranty, a new rack runs around $3500 plus installation. Doesn't seem to be a common problem, but if you are unlucky enough to have this happen out of warranty, it's going to be an expensive one.

Well I have good news and bad news. The good news is it wasn't a BMW reliability issue. A rodent chewed through about 3 wires. The bad news is it's not covered by warranty. It's an outside influence. Make sense but it's still $300 out of pocket. I'm just happy to get my car back pretty quickly.

Thanks for the comments

I knew this. (Need to stop writing things before I've had my morning coffee).
