(EU) 220d vs. 225d - engine differences?

To you BMW insiders - could you please check whether the output difference between 220d and 225d is only due to factory tuning of the same basic engine, or are there any hardware differences in parts of those engines? Like different pistons, crankshaft etc?

I think the difference is the turbocharger. I had a 2011 123d, and it rocked. I'd have kept it, but had to move back to the states. M235i for me.

Considering the high output of 218 hp from just a 2-liter engine, I'd suspect some vital elements might be strengthened in comparison to the regular 20d. Perhaps forged crankshaft, etc.?

The turbocharger you mention is certainly different (or at least tuned differently), but it's not a part/subassembly that must withstand the increased load...

Single turbo in 220d, twin turbo in 225d.

By "twin turbo" you mean 2 turbochargers, or a single one with twinscroll (all modern BMW engines are "twinpower"?)

Think it's like the system employed in the 35/40d engines.
