Just read this:

Wrapping up the list of worst cars of 2017 is the BMW M240i. This may come as a surprise, since BMW M series are usually coveted sports cars, but an Migliore called it a “sanitized experience.”
“This vehicle was just kind of boring,” said Migliore. “This one did not get our blood pumping, not like the Porsche, not like the Ford GT.”

Well it's true if you stay in ECO mode below 2500 rpm the 240 is quiet and smooth...

But that really is a disservice to dis the 240.

Funny thing, I did my first test drive in "normal" mode for the first 20 minutes of the 25 minute test drive, and was a bit disappointed at the numbness. I didn't realize at first, because I was so excited, and nervous at the same time. Once I hit Sport+ with the chassis stiffened up, I felt "at home".

And to save the lazy mofo's the effort;

"This year, 10Best again proved that there are some nice cars to choose from if you’ve budgeted $40,000 to $50,000, but few are as entertaining as BMW’s top 2-series models, with their combination of humble size; pouncing, liquid thrust from the optional six pots; and piano-*wire tension to the controls. You can see why we picked the M235i last year, but the world keeps turning. The 2-series lineup gets new monikers: The 230i replaces the 228i as the base four-cylinder; the M235i becomes the M240i; and now there’s the juiced M2, basically an M240i with flares, chairs, tires, brakes, and a suspension tune, plus another 30 horsepower (though it can only match the M240i’s torque with a time-limited overboost function)."

Well, the yahoo at Yahoo isn't the only one who feels that way.

From a writer at Autoblog (based in the UK):

<<Like the 1 Series before it, the BMW 2 Series coupes have always been close to the car we want them to be. While compact, they're inevitably heavy for their size. No amount of power or traction can fully correct that. What the 2 Series in general, and the M240i xDrive specifically, desperately needs, is a diet and two less driven wheels.

The M240i is fast and grippy, sure, but it does so without conveying much sense of speed or occasion. If slow-car-fast is good, fun-car-fast is better. This is fast-car-bored-to-death, and that's a travesty. What the M240i should be is an M2 (which is positively delightful) with less power, less weight, less tire and more direct feedback. Fun, quick but not blisteringly so, but involving. The M240i as it sits now is a sanitized, clinical experience that might please a stop watch or a spec sheet, but doesn't please the driver. It's my pick simply because it has so much potential, but is ultimately a disappointment behind the wheel.>>

I think many folks would agree this isn't just a 2 Series problem, but really a BMW problem. While I think BMW has recognized the problem and is moving to fix it by shedding lbs in the brand new 5 Series, ALL BMW's need to go on a serious diet if they want to remain the Ultimate Driving Machine. It's a big reason why there isn't a BMW to be found on the C&D 10 Best for 2018 list.

C&D 2017

Winner: M2 / M240i C&D 10 Best
.
.
Absent from 2018 but cost is more of a negative keeping it off the list.
.
.
Sure - BMW's could go on a diet but I would not want an aluminum body 2
Series either.

A thought: C&D may have kept it off the 2018 list because of LCI, particularly the digital-gauge bug that's cropped up ... just a thought.

That said, the 2018 10Best list has four new winners:
- Audi RS3
- Honda Civic Sport/Si/R
- M-B E400 / E43
- Alfa Romeo Giulia

The four that dropped off:
- BMW M240i / M2
- Chevy Bolt
- Mazda3
- Ford Mustang GT350 / 350R

There's no direct correlation between what dropped and what made the list. One could argue that both the RS3 and E400 are 2 Series competitors, though neither are direct ones ...

... and both are more expensive than an M2, so the price argument is baloney unless you consider that the base versions of the four additions collectively cost more ($173,295) than the four subtractions ($158,155).

Digital-gauge bug? Can you expand on that please?

Most cars' bugs were corrected at port, but a few of the first LCIs made it to dealers.

More evidence of it continuing: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1446101

Bottom line is that BMW didn't test the software as completely as it should have.

So the reviewer thinks that what the “xDrive specifically” needs is to not be all-wheel drive? Then don’t get the all-wheel drive..

Whew, looks like I dodged a huge bullet.
Almost ordered a 2018 M240i to replace my M235i a few months ago --- and would have ended up swapping one of the most fun bimmers ever built with a boring car.
Thanks to the automotive experts at Yahoo, I sure won't make that mistake.
