Find some other device that lights up at night when the headlights turned on and is close to the P3... It may have a wire you can test (+12v headlights on, 0v off)...

Never mind!
That should work once you configure the P3 to auto dim mode......

I purchased P3gauge in summer still with beta software . There is wrong oil temp values, so I wrote to P3cars (7.11).
Rick wrote me: "to fix the oil temp calibration, we would need to send you the final, non-beta software, which was released a couple weeks ago." But it was the last answer, from this date I did not get any answer to my questions !!!And I´m on beta software still.
So I am quite disappointed in p3cars. BEWARE !

smahel,
Did you not post this over here?
http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1064817

Your best route is thru P3cars to get your software updated. Please e-mail them again or maybe call and speak with someone? 614-317-3035

At least give them a chance....they have supported many of us

I am not seeing your e-mail, but I do remember the original conversation. Please feel free to e-mail tim@p3cars.com , matt@p3cars.com, or jake@p3cars.com... if you are just e-mailing me direct, keep in mind my wife and I just had twin boys , one of which was in the ICU for a while after birth... and I am only in the office once a week til things get back to normal with my home life. Sorry if we missed it, jake@p3 has been handling my e-mails for me, but there are some that probably slip through the cracks.

You can also call us at 1-614-317-3035, or use the form on our contact page of the website. Sorry if I dropped the ball on your e-mail, it shouldn't have happened.

Software updates are free for you, just pay $14 for international shipping... we send a pre-programmed memory chip that installs into the control box, so you do not have to ship anything back to us... just toss the old memory chip.

That is the correct signal, the p3 will trigger dim mode with anything above 1 volt.

Did you make sure to configure the gauge to d.On.A to enable auto-dim in software?

@RiXst3r - thanks for the info. And congratulations (plus best wishes - hope the tiny one is getting on OK!)

The "dim" config menu does not appear on the gauge at the moment, but then again I haven't checked config when the temporary wire tap was in, so I'll do that this weekend and post a few photos on @zipphreak's thread, in case more people with an F20 wonder where to connect the green wire.

@smahel - I checked the oil temp on the P3 against the internal thermometer reading in the instrument panel, and the P3 is within +0/-2 °C between 5 °C and 121 °C with the new software (my gauge is dated 1 November 2014). When you get the new chip you should be OK!

I think I'll run default and decide later.
Hook up the auto dimming wire, it takes all of 5 minutes and its worked perfectly for me ever since. All you need to do is to pop the little trunk release button out of the trim and use the supplied self tapping t connector on the +12v line going to the switch, which should be the grey/pink wire running to it. After that is done you just need to go into the settings on the gauge and enable the auto dimming function and it will work perfectly. I drove around for less than 24 hours before I went back and hooked the dimmer wire up. I know you can dim the thing on your own by holding down the right (iirc) button for about 3 seconds, but if you have auto stop start enabled, the P3 VIDI will lose its power after about 5 seconds of the engine being off and it defaults back to full brightness as soon as the engine kicks back in.

zipphreak did a nice writeup showing exactly how to set up the automatic dimming function and it really is just that easy to do. I used his guide when doing mine, but I also used my multimeter just to be 100% sure I was tapping into the +12v line, but I'm convinced that at least on the 2 series that are on the road right now, the grey/pink line to that switch is always the switched +12v line powering the light for the switch.

Do all of the units that were sent out during the group buy have the latest firmware on them? I haven't had any issues with mine at all but I just like to make sure I have the most current stuff if possible.

IIRC alt the group buy units were advertised with the oil temp included as an upgrade to the previous generation.
