Zero issues with my 08 1er either.

Great car !

  • US: March 2016 through October 2018
Let's assume it refers to the base M2. Time will tell whether special M2 versions will ever be released someday too.
So if that info is correct, the first production year will be a 2016 model year car. Then in the fall of 2016,the 2017 model year cars come out. Then in the fall of 2017,the 2018 model year cars come out.

Does that mean that in October of 2018,it will still be a 2018 model year car, or will there be a short run of 2019 model year cars?

Evidence:
- B57 is a diesel. S engines traditionally have model numbers of the mainstream engines they're based on, which is why we should expect S58 or (wouldn't that be fun?) S48, not S57.
- "M performance" models are not products of BMW M GmbH. They never get S engines.
- On the other hand, X4 M40i is indeed planned to get the same engine as M2, the top tune version of N55 I wrote about before.

Back in the 90s Porsche offered interesting "X50" and "X51" kits for its 993: factory power upgrades for the standard "street" 993 models (WLS = "Werkleistungssteigerung" = power increase). You just had to tick a box in the options list when ordering a 993 and dig a little deeper into your wallet. Later, Porsche allowed these kits to be retrofitted (some info: http://flugplatz911.blogspot.nl/2014...dard-body.html).

Those days are over. Nowadays car manufacturers prefer to offer "special editions" (more profitable in cash and reputation). No option you can tick while ordering the base car - you gotta buy the special edition car (S, RS, GTS, CSL, CRT, etc.). For alternative engine tuning features, you most likely gotta visit the after market folks.

And BMW Competition Package (ZCP or CS [Club Sport]) or ///M Performance packs ? Though versatile and welcomed by many (especially by track aficionados), are more some sort of consolation prizes, as these regard mostly anything (add-ons) but power upgrades.

However, I can perfectly imagine that quite some would be prepared to pay an extra dime for an ///M power upgrade for the base M2. If ever made available, I guess these wouldn't be optional ...except if you consider getting an M2 GTS/CSL/CRT itself as an "option".

We all may dream, don't we ?

You're misinformed as the X51 package is still offered by Porsche for a ridiculous price, of course. I don't think the "power option" would be popular as most would request that the option be standard for a higher base price. Its a consumers market and we are all enticed by the latest and greatest just to be ahead of each other. Porsche makes crazy money off these editions when there are really just a Carrera S with a X51, alcantera interior, center lock wheels and stickers. Its hilarious.

What BMW needs to do, is not offer more options but create a GTS line of the M cars. Higher performance spec models at $15,000 - $20,000 higher MSRP that include the aforementioned, at a lower production run (not limited). A 991 GT3 or in the case of the M2, Cayman GT4 alternative.

Speculation: M2 to get Next-Gen 3.0 L

Anyone hearing that the M2 will be debuting a new engine code named S57? Capable of 400hp but will be limited to 375hp. This rumor seems to have some credence. With talk about the current 3.0 L engine being only capable of 360hp. The update makes sense.

The N55 going in the X4 M40i is running 375hp.

Remember a BMW boss stated that the M235i wasn't a "dedicated M" and as a BMW M should be, the main difference will be the motor. It has to be a S something not a N55!!!!

It's an upgraded N55 that hasn't been used yet. The N55B30T0.

Interesting- the aftermarket has seen these power levels (particular the folks at Vargas) with a few changes to the existing N55. Seems like all it would take would be a slightly larger turbine housing and a more aggressive tune.

Realistically, 375hp from an inline 6 with a turbo is modest. We are in 2014 where 4cyl turbo cars make close to 300hp from factory.

Agreed... A45 makes 360hp from its 2.0L 4 cylinder. 400hp from 6 shouldn't be a problem.

S57 would suggest its based off the N57... which is a diesel engine.

An N55 based engine has already been confirmed on this forum through a reliable source.

The rumor is 370hp, which in BMW world really means 370 whp. Imho, that's plenty for a car of the 2er's size. We keep hearing that BMW wants to seperate the M2 from the M3/4. Well there it is. More focus on M2 being nimble and fun, while M3/4 is faster and more clinical.

The extra displacement and cylinders should also help negate some of the turbo lag as well, as felt on the highly boosted A45, improving power delivery.

I feel like people keep forgetting how small the 2 series really is. Pictures don't capture it's shape/proportions.
