That said they are definitely my favorite magazine reviewer.
Very true. This isn't a dig against the M235i (which, by all accounts, is looking amazing), but this article seems to compare optimistic C&D performance figures for the M235i with some of the more commonly accepted values for the E9X M3. For example, I'm sure a pro driver can do better, but I've logged several VBox 0-60 mph (1 foot rollout) runs at 4.4 s with my 6MT E92, and I've run 12.9Xs at 110 mph at the dragstrip.

By way of comparison, C&D's numbers for the E92 M3 were 0-60 mph in 3.9 s and the 1/4 mile in 12.4 s at 114 mph. I don't think ANYONE else has recorded an E92 M3 on stock tires with a 3.9 s 0-60 mph, and that 1/4 mile ET and trap speed seem better than anything else I can recall seeing.

Again, not a dig in any way; the review seems awesome. It's just always better to compare apples to apples.

The potential of the M2 has me completely off the M4 bandwagon. I even changed my avatar.
Same here.

Nice review. The M2 should be an awesome machine.

I just couldn't bring myself to pay $50k for a new M235i so I spent much less for a 2011 335i. Will definitely keep an eye out for a used M235i or M2 when the time is right.

Considering its the "ultimate driving machine," the manual transmission on my 335i isn't that great, even with the UUC SSK and DSSR.

BUT…let's all settle down and remember it's not a *true* M car.

Just because it accelerates as fast, stops as quick, runs the skidpad as well, costs less and gets better mpg. It's really just a glorified 135i. <cough!>

They also spend most of the article showing how it's equal to, or just a hair off the M3 specs…yet then mention that it costs 11 grand more than a base 228i (???)

Nobody is mentioning a 228i and an M3 in the same breath.

Don't talk about how the performance matches the torch-bearer for the brand and then talk about how the price is higher than the cheapest, entry-level car they offer.

Their test numbers are lower than any I've seen in any publication. Wondering if they tested it at a high altitude or something.

*M*235i, some people are really bothered by that. Sorry but that is what the car is called and the M moniker will go with it, whether they like it or not.

At the end of the day, I'll tell people I drive an M235i, and with the performance to back it up, that will be that.

Hmmmm. So what will the M2 numbers look like and how will it compare to the M4? We'll likely see many M2 vs M4 debates like we've seen M3/M4 vs M5/M6 debates.

Gotta say though I like the numbers

Probably comparably equipped to the used 335i he bought.

I still think the M235i is the bargain of the century, and even if it weren't a total bargain, it'd be a great car.

I'm worried they'll screw up the M2. I don't see how, but I'm still worried.

Well I have a 335i with the MPPK and an Akra exhaust which is pretty much the tune the M235i has. It is a lot faster than I ever thought it would be given the specs. There has been a lot of discussion on this forum and the general consensus is that BMW 6 cylinder engines are underrated.

The M235i is a sweet ride. Personally I don't agree with C & D statement about the 6 speed manual being the choice for enthusiasts. I used to love manuals but after owing the 8 speed ZF, I would never go back - it is perfectly suited to the drivetrain and shifts almost as quickly as a DCT. Sometimes you just have to accept progress. The DTM drivers prefer paddles - its quicker.

Nope. It's done in MD where Motor Week is based.

You left out the other C&D test figures for the E92 M3, which was more realistic.

On the M235i, the other two mags are quite similar.

MT:
0-60 4.4
QM 13.0 @ 106.6 mph

R&T:
0-60 4.5
QM 13.1 @ 107.8 mph

So look at the 5-60 time, that means more anyway if it's a daily driver

Not much room between this and the M3 for a M2 to fit in. M235i xdrive might even take another 0.1 off

Have you tried pricing one on bmwusa.com? I have. Paint is $550, add M-sport suspension etc. and the price climbs pretty quickly. $44k LOL. That is funny! Do you think the dealers order many M235is with no options?

I wonder if BMW would ever consider having a special, manual only, performance model. Most sport compacts like the Civic Si, Speed 3, WRX etc. are available only with a manual transmission - if you want an automatic, you won't get the performance. (I think WRX this year is finally offered with an auto.)

Unfortunately, these days with 8 speeds and fast shifters, the automatics are as fast or faster than most manual transmissions. Pity.
