Problems while refueling...

So I'm sure others have had this issue...wife's 2014 M235i. When we refuel, the pump doesn't want to keep running, shuts off constantly. Will go to several gallons initially then only 3-5 seconds at a time. Very annoying. My search points to a clogged vent line.

I've also found many who said change the angle or depth of the nozzle or use varying pump speeds. Nothing works.

Anyone here have any experience with this? Fix procedures?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

We have one pump at our local station that does that to all our vehicles so we don't use the one pump any more. This should not be related to the vent line as it does not come into play when refueling, just normal vapor venting. I presume you have tried other pumps?

Yes...we've tried other pumps, same symptoms regardless of where we refuel.

I've never heard of this on a BMW before but I had this problem on our Jeep Grand Cherokee where it is a known issue. I had to have the fuel filler neck assembly replaced. There was something defective inside that kept getting worse until I had the exact symptoms you describe.

I've had that problem a few times on trips down to Florida. Usually I could get it to work by slowly filling it.
Never had it happen up here in WI so I'm guessing it's the pump that caused it to happen.

Looks like ( from the Real OEM pics) that the filler tube is all metal, maybe it got a bend in it from a road hazard impact?

Nope, there's a short rubber section between the metal tube and the tank. It's very close to the exhaust and the exhaust heat isn't kind to it. There's some heat shields there, but not enough, it seems.

It took me forever to figure it out because everything looked okay from the outside. The layers of the hose delaminate from the heat and cause internal blockage.

msendit...so is the resolution replacement of the entire fuel filler tube? Can just the rubber section be replaced?

Yeah, Real OEM drawings are not always accurate. Good to know there is a rubber tube AND that that can cause the issue. Looks like item 3 in the diagram P/N 16117305467.

I was thinking Coriolis forces...but yeah the failed hose could be it.

Yes, it's just a hose. You can replace it in 5 minutes.

I used a short piece of hose we had lying around in the shop, or something with the correct I.D. from the HW store, don't remember. But I'm sure there's a special BMW-stamped hose with an exact part number that was probably licked by unicorns, and a dealer would insist on using that.
