JB4 Stage 1 Questions

What is the difference between:

http://burgertuning.com/N55_JB4_F_ch...BMW_tuner.html

http://www.burgertuning.com/N55_Jb_B...nce_Tuner.html

Is it just the small HP difference they provide?

Also, will installing this cause any future problems w/ the transmission, mechanical parts, etc. due to the increased power?

One is the BMS stage 1 and the other is the JB4. The Stage 1 is a simple two plug tune while the Jb4 requires a few more connections but has more features and allows to change maps depending on mods. A FBO car running the JB4 on a mix of e85 is making wayyy more then a "small" hp difference over the stage 1.

If you are getting bolt ons, get the JB4.

If you only want to get a tune and nothing else, get the JB stage 1.

aerostar , here are the difference other than the power gain.

BMS Stage 1:
- 2 sensors that need to be connected to
- Turbo Boost bump adjustable via separately sold BMS USB DATA cable and required a Windows PC, default at 3psi on top of stock

BMS JB4 Stage 2:
- 2 sensors that need to be connected to, plus CAN bus wires on the new EWG board version, while additional power and ground on the older board. But both of them work perfectly the same way.
- Multiple maps for future mods with different settings
- Firmware updateable
- Need a separately sold BMS DATA USB cable and Windows PC to do the firmware update and datalog

If I get the stage 1, will BMW void the warranty if something catastrophic happens and they plug into the car computer?

Not unless they can proof that the aftermarket parts that is indeed that causing the damage.
Be aware that they will play a scare tactic to make their life easier.

Just be friends with your SA. Despite what people say about "dealers have to prove your mods caused the problem..etc."

Truth is: once your SA flags your car stating the reasons (mods), NO ONE can reverse this. Not even BMWNA. So go ahead and claim the Magnuson Act all you want, your car will still be out of warranty.

Just because they flagged the car for mods and unilaterally void your warranty doesn't mean they don't have to comply with the law.

It will certainly make life a lot more difficult though... and there will be a lot of hoops to jump through.

kd0t Knightelf , correct. Just get to know the SA and do them a favor for not getting them in trouble also.

This is not true.

Once your VIN is flagged for mods or whatever the reason is, your warranty is voided. I've seen the red popup when the SA enters the vehicle's VIN.. And once any dealer sees this, they will not perform any warranty work for free

Nothing catastrophic will happen if you right maps.
technically Jb stage 1 and the new Jb4 are undetectable. The ECU will not know the actual boost values that the car is running and will think everything is running normally.

You're confusing the internal company warranty system vs. the law. If your lawyer sends a letter to BMW NA, unless they have concluded your mods caused the defect they have no legs to stand on. Just because their system says your warranty is voided doesn't mean the law cannot compel them to fix your car.

As I mentioned it makes it a lot harder so I agree with you to know the SA, but warranty voided is not the be all and end all, there are other ways to get your car fixed at BMW NA's cost.

Note: the above is not to be construed as legal advice, if you get screwed over by BMW, see your lawyer.

By law the dealership cannot void your warranty unless they can prove that your mod was a direct cause to the component failure.
