M-Performance LSD Fluid

Has anybody replaced the fluid on the M-Performance LSD along with their first oil change?
I am coming up on 2,500 miles and would like to do an initial oil change, but also thought of the fluid for the LSD.

Can't. Unit is sealed -- has "lifeftime" (lol) oil.

Edit: You can change the oil (probably uses 75w90 Redline or something), but it's quite difficult as the differential does not have a drain plug. You'd need to get the housing open or something.

Agree with Liquidpaper. Sealed and fluid's good for the lifetime of the LSD. Only need attention when servicing LSD.

I agree with the statement, but understand that BMW "Lifetime" equals the 50K miles they are willing to warrantee it for. Extra maintenance might be warranted.

The diff's have been sealed for a least 10 years and I know of none of my friends who have had any problems with their diff's.

Welded, yes. That is absolutely true. However, the MP LSD has no drain plug (but is welded, just like a regular BMW Diff) for the gear oil. Differentials with limited slip functionality usually have a drain plug for the gear oil (so you can change it).

Dif's or LSD's? There is a big difference in the required maintenance. We are talking about a clutch type.

guys there is a lot of confusion on this.

A. There is a fill plug on the m performance lsd. You can use a transfer pump and change the fluid at will. The lsd does not need to be removed. I do mine every 4-5 track days. I use Redline.

B. The fluid is prob. good for 100k in a stock car that never gets the oil heated up. On the track it may get out of heat range and the fluid will not lubricate properly accelerating wear.

C. Clutch pack system so the oil gets contaminated with the dust from the friction plates.

Looks like there is a drain/fill plug. The 1 series guys change the fluid... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409293

A: I see no doubt in this post.

B: BMW use to recommend that the oil should be changed at the 1200 mile break in point and then changed every 30,000 miles thereafter. This all changed as soon as they were on the hook for maintanence. See that as you will.

According to the ETK, the part number for the BMW oil is 83222295532 (this may differ for the LSD). My feelings are A: I don't want to void the warranty and B: I want to keep the car for a long period of time (so I don't want a noisy diff at 90k miles.) Therefore I am going to follow BMWs older recommended intervals with their fluid. If the diff blows up and they take an oil sample, I don't want them to refuse to cover it because a fluid (that was probably better than OEM like redline) was used so I will use their fluid.

So whats the part number for the fluid in this LSD ? I figure maybe its a good idea to get this changed along with manual tranny

It is hard to find information on it, but I was told by a dealer mechanic that cars with the BMW M Performance limited slip differentials should use:
BMW Differential Gear Oil SAF-XJ+FM part number83222282583. He said that although for some clutch differentials the BMW specification calls for their standard differential oil, there is a service bulletin out basically stating that if clutch type limited slip differentials are making noise to switch them to the BMW differential oil with friction modifiers.


Based on Forum consensus, this is the same as Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140

Both of these oils contain friction modifiers for the clutches.

There, I fixed that for you.

BMW used to have a realistic service interval for a performance vehicle, until they included "free" maintenance - at which point the service interval went to crazy lengths. The reality of "lifetime" fluid is, if you wait till you have a problem to change the fluid, then you replace the aluminum housing containing said fluid at the same time because it's now reached its end of service life - the differential becomes as disposable as the lube. On the other hand, if you replace the fluid at regular intervals you can realistically expect the diff to last the lifetime of the car.

I have some of this limited slip diff oil with friction modifiers. Would it be OK to use this in the standard open diff on my m235?

I am wondering if Mobil1 75w140 is the same thing thats available everywhere. They list some Mobil1 VS 500 lube thats also 75w140 but not sold anywhere lol

These units are NOT sealed

There's a single fill port you can shove an extractor in to pull fluid and then re-fill

The notion that fluid for any mechanical assembly on these vehicles is lifetime is retarded

ESPECIALLY considering how little fluid the diff hold

Mine will get drained and refilled at same time as tranny which will likely be ~6k

It's certainly not "lifetime" for a clutch based LSD.

How often do you drain that? I followed 15k intervals on S2k and fluid was draining like new....
