In mostly City, mostly "Sport" driving with a/c on, 6MT, my M235i is reporting 9.8 l/100km, which is about 24 USmpg.

Also i got 29-30mpg on a 385 mile trip all in eco pro mode under 80mph. I found if you keep the car under 75mph (eco mode) you actually get even better gas mileage. The eco would be blue gaining more miles then gray using up what you have gained.

The auto-restart when in start/stop does appear to be less of an event than a full start. One of the SA's at my dealership was saying that when the engine auto-stops, the cylinders are oriented so only a tiny squirt of fuel into one cylinder is necessary to get it going again.

That said, in pure stop and go driving, where you move a few feet, stop for a couple seconds, move a few feet, etc., I would definitely turn it off. You're probably right that it doesn't save fuel, but I'd be even more concerned about the wear and tear.

I think the start/stop feature is ideal for suburban driving, where you drive one or two long blocks, then sit at a light for like 90 seconds waiting for both directions to cycle through regular green and green left-turn arrow.

Oh my god my gas mileage is so bad - and I don't drive it that hard. I think it probably has to do with the fact that I live in West Los Angeles and have to fight traffic all the time.

However (surprisingly) I did get an uninterrupted run down to Costa Mesa (about a 40-50 mile drive) and I got 34.6 MPG (6MT) for that trip. I was pretty impressed. I was in ECO PRO for half the time of the trip.

Lucky guys I'm getting around 11.2L/100 km, Think its around 26 mpg in US terms, I drive 60% in Sport mode rest comfort, Was hoping for less due to the papers stating it should do a lot less, But i guess its because i only still have like 850 kilometers driven so far. Maybe after 10k kilometers it will go down somewhat. (Also to mention i drive a lot of city driving so could be that too)

I have a 228i M Sport with the 6 sp manual....on the highway I get about 35mpg.

Around town with my wife in the car I get about 28mpg.

Around town without my wife I get about 24mpg.

Pretty good considering I get a combined 29ish mpg out of my 148hp mazda3.

Just saw a report where cars with this feature have batteries that avg 2 years vs the 4yr avg.

70% freeway 30% city and almost 2mth ownership I am seeing 24mpg's combined with a mix of comfort and sport. Comfort on Freeways and sport mode on the streets with a smidgen of Sport on the freeways at strategic locations and situations.

Interesting! Are batteries covered under BMW's 4 yr warrantly/maintenance plan?

All the wear components involved in starting the engine are beefed up considerably (notably the starter motor) over a vehicle without auto stop/start. I had it on my previous car (r56 mini cooper d - european spec) and used it all the time even in heavy stop and go traffic. A number of parameters have to be met before the car allows its operation such as battery charge levels, engine operating temp, ambient air temp (won't allow it below around 5c) as well as the climate control requirements of the occupants. If these aren't up to scratch/ aren't being met, it won't trigger. Plus in stop and go traffic if it detects frequent start/stop events it won't allow engine shut down to continue to a point where its happening every 5 seconds. I also believe it relies on sufficient brake energy regen to cover the energy costs of the start up too so the alternator doesn't need to work overtime.

Edit: Im currently getting 27mpg (imperial) in my M235i using primarily sport mode in mixed traffic conditions. Have been up to 33mpg using eco pro.....but wheres the fun in that? I run standard petrol too. Uk standard being 95 ron and premium being 97 ron.

Gal Imperial = 4.54 litres
Gal US = 3.79 litres

24-30 mpg

Hi-
After 1300 miles, here's mine (stock, AT, MPE):
- Mix of city/freeway, mainly Comfort and occasional Sport for passing situations, onramps, some city gives me 24 mpg.
- Best was driving San Diego to Pasadena, 95% freeway, going there in Eco and returning in Comfort gave me 30 mpg.

I'm surprised some of the mpg numbers in this thread are so low. My car has about 5000km on it so far. Driving about 50% city and 50% hwy I've averaged 8.6l/100km or about 27mpg over the past 2-3weeks (about 1500 km).

I use eco pro in heavy traffic, comfort mode in smooth city and highway driving, and sport mode for almost all on ramps & merges (with the obligatory acceleration test/catalytic converter clean out when possible)

I am pretty happy with the mileage overall and in eco pro during long highway cruising I am able to obtain the rated 6.4l/100km (37 mpg) travelling between 100-110 kph. At 120 kph which I normally do, I can only get 7l/100km.

One thing that might help put some of these numbers in perspective is if people reported average speed as well as fuel efficiency/consumption.

For example, if my average MPH is in the high 30's, my MPG is usually ~29. If my average speed is in the low 30's, my MPG drops to 27-28. If I go on a trip (100% freeway, going 75-85 when traffic allows), my MPG can get up to the low 30's.

The way my 228i is equipped (manual transmission, no adaptive suspension/steering), the drive mode really only effects throttle response, what shows in the instrument panel and iDrive screen, and perhaps A/C usage. I pretty much avoid Eco Pro (because the throttle response is just too sluggish) and just leave the car in Comfort. I've tried sport but find the throttle a little unnecessarily jumpy. I like smooth speed.

I have to question if driving habits don't have more to do with it than anything else. My F30 335i I typically average around 25-27mpg mixed, mostly highway and I struggle to see how a car that is slightly lighter with effectively the same weight and power train would be any worse.

My assumption is the M235 is just more fun to drive and therefore you're on the gas more.

Could the 4inch larger DP and extra 20something HP have anything to do with this???
