M2 or 997.2 porsche
Lately I have been thinking of looking at porsche 911 primarily 997.2 variants C2 C4 or the S variants coupes. Would they have merit to compare to m2 as a dd?

For a daily driver I'm going for the Macan Turbo. Good handing feel and does everything really well. In Porsche $$ it's actually good value. I was not a fan of suv/cuv until driving one on the auto X and numerous test drives. Or if on a budget you can probably go Macan S and a M2 for the price of a 911. The base 911 is almost 100K with light options.

My buddy has a 997 CS - great car and driving around with him and getting to really experience the P car was the tipping point reason I finally decided to go and test drive the 981 that's now sitting in my garage. Obviously no one's driven the M2 yet, but it looks like you're in a 228 - I had a 235 previously and the difference is night and day.
If you test drive one, you might be ruined like I was.

Do you even have to ask? Should be obvious the Porsche.

Lol, I misread that part. Just FYI oil changes are $200+ not to mention service/warrantee and insurance. Most of these higher end car resale depends on this.
I personally couldn't deal with the attention with a 911 all the time and would go M2. But if you never owned a Porsche I guess sooner is better than later. If it's your only car the awd maybe the better choice if your area snows a lot. |

I considered this and came down on the side of the BMW M2. I don't want to own 2 cars so I need something that will take me grocery shopping, to the hardware store, move around guitars and amps, and generally deal with life. With the rear seat folded down, a 2 series is a very practical car.
Probably could have stumbled through with the Porsche (talk about first world problems) but I would have been thinking about IMS bearings and such. Think this was fixed for the 997.2, but I could also worry about things like the clutch as I gritted my teeth and paid Porsche for periodic maintenance. Paying less for a used car doesn't necessarily translate to other ownership costs. Also, I never found the deal that would push me over the edge. Lots of $65K low mileage 997 examples. Not so many good choices in the $45K to $55K range. Especially if you want a C4 for winter or an S for the extra push. I would rather have a 911 but I'm hoping to enjoy the practicality and low stress aspects of M2 ownership. That and I like the idea of a (mostly) anonymous car that most will view as a generic compact BMW. |

The M2 will be a better DD, IMO, but the 997.2 will be the better car. Lots DD the 997 but it isn't quite as practical as the M2 will likely be. The biggest issue will be getting in/out and back seat room. My 7 year old barely fits in the back of a 997
However, in reality, either will work and if you really love the 997.2 to drive, get it as it is a great car (assuming you can find a CPO with some warranty).

I stalked CarMax for months waiting for the right 997.2 to pop up so I could get an extended warranty through them. Wouldn't pay for the expendables but would cover big ticket items. Just never found the right car at a price I was willing to pay.

I just checked that Porscheusa.com has a certified 2012 991 listed for $60K. I don't know how Canada pricing compares but that is one heck of a cross shop. Just note that 2012 had both 997 and 991.

I would probably like the driving dynamics of the 997.2 better and would hate the maintenance costs vs. an M2. The M2 will also be more practical in terms of adult passengers and space.

It is an interesting proposition. I am very interested in adding an M2, but if the right 997.2 GTS (manual) pops up, it will be hard to resist.

I think the M2 could swallow a couple of Clek Fllos in the back (tough to tell from the release pictures since most people don't care about the back seats at launch!)

Well, I went to Toronto today and to the largest Porsche dealer in the country and they had several examples of 997.2 around, unfortunately raining and cold weather and they only had a blue one sitting behind 2 others, a c4s was already on test drive. But I did get to sit in one, start it up and talk to sales guy on many questions. Roomwise, the 997 seems to have enough for me, I was sort of surprised. Rear 2 seat can fold down, might be able to get 1 golf club set in, the 2 I have now will take no issue but seats folded down and I can get push cart in as well. I am single, no wife, no children, so a sports car is doable all the way for me. Interior, the center stack with nav and bose system although a little dated still has most features. I am going to drive my 2 for the winter but am still going to keep this option on burner until the m2 arrives, then will do massive comparison. Hell even some of the 991 I am seeing are coming down into 997 pricing areas, and with the 991.2 coming out a slew of other ones may arrive come spring and maybe price adjustments. Who knows, anyways thanks for the advice.

I have a 2012 997.2 GTS - IMO it's not a great DD. I'm cross shopping the M2, Macan S & Gen 6 Camaro SS as a DD. I drove a few 991/911's - much better as a DD, but too much money IMO.
I had to sell my '15 Macan so the STBX-wife didn't get it in the divorce. It would have been my favorite car of all times if I could have one with three pedals. |

I am in line for a new M2 at my local dealer. To be honest, I am looking forward to my own head to head comparison of my own two cars and will let you know my thought. The 911 is a brilliant car and I think will always turn more heads than the M2, but to the true "Knower of cars" will know what the M2 is about. ....my wife is going to love her "new to her" Porsche !
