There is a way for seller to avoid tax implications and hassle of a private deal. Could help OP get this done. Since seller is getting an X3 he has his dealer do a pass through courtesy deal. Dealer buys 235 buyer pays $125 or thereabouts for a full inspection (which is money well spent anyway) and then buys car from dealer. Dealer handles all paperwork and it's easier for all involved, seller still gets the tax credit on his trade, and OP gets his car for a prenegotiated price. Best for all involved if dealer willing to help out with a favor.

I sold my m235 this way my buyer met me at the dealer and was in and out in 15 mins.

I actually want a private deal. I will register the car in NV, no sales tax on private party car purchase in that state..which makes complete sense. So big benefit to me for private party transaction.

Sorry if I seem stressed, I guess I get this way at the end of every car transaction, especially for a 'fun' car we don't really need.

I offered $34k, he countered at $34.5k which I think is pretty good given the equipment/condition. I've asked if he could have the annual service done before I pick it up (it's a little early), so I would at least save one annual oil service cost. Waiting for response, but I don't think I'll let the car slip away given how close we are.

Oil change is $150 don't sweat it either way. Didn't know that about taxes by you that's unique in my experience.

Definitely don't lose the car over $500. Not sure what you do for a living but if you spend a few hours more looking for something else you'll waste more of your time than $500 is worth.

Good luck!

I'd say go for it, if you haven't already. My 228 was my version of the midlife reset, and it still brings a massive grin even thinking of it (now into year 2). Part of the icing on the cake was how smooth and simple the sales went. I'd already decided that I wasn't going to grind them out for every dollar (didn't think I'd get much for the effort) and as it turned out the dealership was very easy to work with, and cut a deal that was a little better than I'd expected I could have gotten with the arm-twisting. I think you'll appreciate the simplicity of the love at first sight story, and it sounds like the price is at or below what many here were anticipating. You wont even need to gut it out through the self-control hell that is the break in period (especially in Nevada - don't know how you guys keep your licenses with all that flat open road, punctuated by very hungry radar traps).

Looks like I got it! Split the difference, came up $250 and he agreed. Getting excited, now have to work out all the logistics. Thanks for all the help gang! I'll post up pics when I get it.

I might consider a tune, really hadn't thought of anything I'd like to do on the cosmetic front. I'm going to take some time with the car first to see if I want to bother doing even that.

Don't worry about pics, I take pics of just about anything!

I think the seller is fortunate, the dealer would not have given him anywhere near that much in trade I expect. And when I bought my '15 I recall the sales guy telling me the warranty was not transferable.

The warranty is transferable, only the free scheduled maintenance is not. I guess I'm going to have to buy wiper blades at some point! Oil changes are $100 at my local independent, so that's not too bad...but I think it sux that BMW has cheapened up their coverage, but I'm sure that has been covered ad nauseum here..

Congrats on the new car. You'll love it - at least I love mine. As I understand it, BWM reduced covered maintenance to 3 years for 2017 model years but made it transferable again. The fourth year (also transferable) can be purchased for about $2K. Effectively that works out to a $2K price increase over the 2016 models. It was one of the many reasons I chose a left-over 2016 M235i back in December, as opposed to a 2017 M240i sometime this year.

Are there any good bmw vin decoders these days? Trying to get the in service date. I guess I can call my dealer. The decoders I've seen don't give you the options listed the same way the original sticker does (the car comes with original sticker).

Talk to your dealer. They can get in service, build sheet etc. most importantly can see if flagged by BMW for stuff that doesn't show on Carfax.

This is great advice. Also, VIN decoders operate from BMW AG's manufacturing database, not any dealer database -- that's why port-installed options don't show up on them but show up on Munroney stickers, which aren't compiled and printed until the car arrives at the dealership. The only place you'll get up-to-date info on a particular car is through the dealer network of the country the car is operated in.

Thanks. Was wondering if I should also run a carfax...usually don't bother on newer cars like this. Do people still have subscriptions to carfax that I could 'lease' for one search?

I got the in service date and build sheet. Interesting, the build sheet msrp doesn't agree with the factory sticker msrp. Looks like the dealer installed stuff shows as 'N/C' on build sheet, but added a couple grand to ultimate msrp. The only services the car has had to date were normal minor stuff, nothing else. Thanks!
