My main reason to have the dock is just somewhere to put my phone, other than in my pocket (I have a big phone). Sometime I put it in the center console, but then I forget about it, and leave it in the car.

The smartphone integration package is something I really would have wanted. My car came loaded and that's the one thing they didn't add.
Nah, you don't need the smartphone integration. In fact, when I was buying mine, they didn't even have one that is compatible with iphone 6. You just need the "office" feature in the idrive - you can easily code it in for free if you dont have it. Then you will have email and text.

There is also BMW apps feature, and if your car has that it adds many cool features. It can stream webradio from your phone, pandora, facebook, gopro - all controlled right on the idrive screen.

Check these features out, learn how they work, and leave phone holders for peasant's vehicles.

I will have to check that out. I just got the car and am still learning all the features.

Is there a thread showing how to run a wire up through the vent to charge a permanently mounted phone? I can't find a thread.

What happens when you have a passenger that feels hot?

What about when they ask why you don't use the giant screen on the dashboard and the aesthetic oddity of placing your cell phone on a mount atop the vent?

Also, obstructions are known to interfere with airflow.

That's when you judge them for not being into cars. :

Millennial666: are you serious? Air flow?

No one has ever asked me about why its there, if they did thats when i pull over and say get the f' out. It's a cell phone dedicated for monitoring, it doesn't leave the car.

If you want to replace the vent with a monitoring system be prepared to pay $300 - $1200.00. Or go with the Cell Phone and Saddle 2 with Torque for $12.00.

Or don't monitor at all and guess at all your values.

How would placing an object directly on top a vent not obstruct air flow?

Removing the vent and replacing it with a cell phone is an even worse solution. I have no idea what you're obsessively monitoring, but your values have been poorly monitored if you think kicking passengers out of your car for simply asking about your bizarre decisions is not acceptable behavior.

*Maybe you're monitoring the mediocrity of AWD vs RWD, but that's not something you want to put on display.

you have no idea what we are talking about.

On a cold day monitor oil and coolant temp, regular driving battery, boost/vacuum, AFR, etc...

Who cares if your passenger is hot or cold.

You dont replace an air vent with a cell phone:

Bryan, that dude is a troll. Just look at his user name.

What gauges do you usually have displayed in Torq?

Mostly Coolant since its been cold- I cant seem to get a dial for OIL Temp, but i've found coolant over 160f means the car is warmed up. The oil temp does show up in the first screen that shows all the cars data. So it is available, I just cant seem to make it its own gauge. Plus i like the audio voice that tells me "operating temperature has been reached" or "icy conditions"

I also monitor boost/vacuum, batt, AFR, gas milage, rpm, hp, I use track reccorder for hpde's... I have played with the gforce meter but don't think its super accurate, some of the other apps available track that much better.

It also clears codes, but I haven't had to try that out yet.

Its a great tool since our cars lack the gauges by default. Well priced for what it provides. It does take a little time to get everything setup correctly, but once its dialed in, it works great.

Oh, not by a long shot. All it means is that the vents are blowing warm air. The coolant lets you know that the head temperature around the cylinders is up. The oil temperature is important in that the temperature of the other main moving parts (bearings et al) are fully warmed and ready to go.

I'll have coolant up over 200 within 5 miles of leaving my house. At that point, the oil isn't even past 160. You need a minimum of 10, more likely 15, miles of driving at highway speed before your engine is warmed up (oil >200F) on a below freezing day.

Good grief. I would be at work before the oil warmed up. I'm glad I live somewhere that's relatively warm.

You probably still aren't getting it hot enough to cook off condensates or get everything fully expanded and seated if your drive is that short, regardless of how warm it is where you live.

There's a reason beyond "because it's a fun thing to do" that people recommend you take your car on a 30 minute or more drive every week or so. 15 minute commutes are brutal on your oil. You need to get it fully hot to boil off all the things that accumulate in it on short hop drives.

I have a 20 min commute to work, but only 5 miles of that is highway. I assume that the one 30 min drive a week thing only counts in the cold months. It gets pretty how here in the summer.

Still ought to do it. It still takes at least 2 local / 10 highway miles for my car to get the oil over 200 even in August.

Also depends how long you plan to keep your car. I tend to keep them a long time (131,000 miles on my 335 / 190,000 on my Passat) and if you plan on long term, the turbos and other bearing surfaces will thank you.

I'm a long-term kind of owner as well. Looks like I need to get Torq so I can keep an eye on oil temps as well. Thanks for the info.
