It's a real shame the R420 got killed as I was hoping that would be my next car, price point probably would have been ridiculous as Rs go for more than xdrive m240is in my area. I love the mk7 and a hatch would have been a big plus with 2 dogs! |

I agree on the Mk7 R, it is our "sport utility" - sporty enough, ploughs through anything with winter tyres on and has a decent and well shaped load space with the seats folded. In Canada the R is also good value, CAD$42K (US$32K) on the road including taxes for our Lapiz Blue manual car with 19" wheels, Nav and DCC. The M240i will be the fun daily driver and long distance cruiser, used in the winter as the 2nd daily driver. The M240i is also a bit of a bargain in Canada at the moment, our Mineral Grey manual car will be CAD$50.5K (US$38.5K) on the road inc taxes when it arrives in April. The Caterham R400 stays as the hard core fun and track car (1:30 around the local track compared with 1:40 in the Golf R), but is stored away over the winter.

38.5k including taxes!! wow, I assume Calgary doesn't have sales tax like Ontario lol. Can you stack fleet on top of that? If you don't have it through your employer, does passport ultimate let you get the fleet discount the same way it does in the US? |

How about they fix their shitty system instead. You're the first one I met who thinks it's a good idea for a car to second-guess your intentions. We have a G35 AT also with adaptive transmission coding and people keep asking on the forums about how to make the transmission unlearn whatever crap it thinks it learned.

The MK7 R market is finally starting to cool off a bit. A local dealer has had a 6MT Lapiz blue '17 since November 3rd. It was all nice and cozy in the showroom, adorned with a bright red bow during the holidays. Now it's sitting behind the dealership, amidst a row of lowly GTI's, with "no payments for 120 days" written on the windshield. They did have a Lapiz DSG on the lot for about a week, but they're always quicker to sell than the manuals. I have seen some deals with $1500 off DSGs at a couple dealers, but most are still selling at MSRP, rather than above MSRP like they were a year ago.

VW needs to get it's head out of it's ass, allowing dealers to scalp on their only halo product pretty much ensured the R had low sales - barely over 4k a year since launch out of 5200 produced (allegedly) imo because the competition was better priced. An R selling for 5% off MSRP with maybe some incentive would probably sell a lot more, but maybe they feel it would cut into the GTi market When an S3 is cheaper than the 'non prestige' version then there's a problem lmao |

Why expect a car coasting at some 1,000 rpm to accelerate with its full potential at your will momentarily? Would YOU? Piotr

Funny those pricing differences between markets, and not so funny everything is so much more expensive in Poland than in the US. I pad some USD 20k less for my Golf 7R than for my M235i... All due to the fact we have to pay extra "luxury tax" for cars with engines greater than 2 liters.

The car doesn't have many options, but the standard car is fine, with power memory seats and auto dimming interior mirror being the two electronic features that are worthwhile to us. Didn't want nav (prefer smartphone) or any features such as blind spot monitoring. The heated steering wheel is nice as standard:

No provincial sales tax, but 5% GST. I couldn't get a corporate discount on top of the negotiated 4% discount on an ordered car, but the dealer markups are already pretty tight in Canada at the moment (6% seems to be the difference between invoice and MSRP for an M240i, from what I have heard from industry sources).

When I drove the 230xi, I felt exactly the same.. I was like.. why is there so much turbo lag? I have a '14 Ram 3500 with the Cummins and I thought it was bad, but the BMW takes the cake. Driving it in Sport mode mostly fixes it, but that's because it's holding a lower gear to keep the rpms up... Still I ordered it because I figured I'm going to have to compromise with something else with a different brand.
BTW, on the Cummins, the reason for the lag is emissions... They don't want to dump fuel in there. I'm thinking about getting a tuner and ripping out the emissions to get rid of the lag on it.

I see BMW offers a nice discount - and then sucks nearly all that money back in with their ridiculously overpriced F&PDI and "admin" fees (the latter is something I have yet to pay on any car). |

I just test drove a 2014 M235i auto with 2200 miles and did not experience what the OP experienced. Maybe it is indeed because of the "break-in" period?

My 2016 228i MSport with 8AT has zero shifting problems. In Sport mode, it shifts noticeably faster than in Comfort. I agree with the posts about adaptation - it takes awhile for the trans to adapt to your style.
