I'm with Geico. As a point of reference, my 2006 TL currently runs $765 a year and the quote for the M240i is $1210. I knew it'd go up, but I figured it would stay under a grand.

Geico is really cheap. Our carrier was cheaper than the other two high end carriers I tried, so we went with them. And we have an umbrella. Thanks.

Just moved to Kemper insurance. $1,100 total for a 2018 X3 M40i and 2016 M235i with 250/500 limits.

As others have noted, insurance can vary wildly based on where you live, so comparing to someone not in your local area is kind of pointless. With that said, we can compare experiences with claims and that can be useful. I have Mainstreet America. They were by far the cheapest for me, and when I had a claim they were marvelous. I previously had Safeco and I would not use them again even if they were cheapest, they are beyond horrible if you ever have a claim. They argued every little penny of every claim. A truly nightmarish experience.

I just cut over to new insurance today, and the best advice I can offer is to shop around. I mainly switched due to house insurance costs, which I cut in half for better insurance. But the bundled car insurance was cheaper on nearly every other quote also. And look beyond the big name consumer places with ads on television. Their quotes were average, and their ratings were mediocre at best. Look for smaller regional carriers. And if you're a veteran, get USAA.

I let inertia keep me on my old insurance for FAR too long. And if it hadn't been for the ridiculous 30% increase in house insurance this year I might have just stuck with it for yet another year. Like a frog in a pot with the heat on.

Switching insurance companies saved me 30% on my car insurance alone.

One aspect of this that we hadn't considered after decades of using AAA in California came up when we moved to New Hampshire. That was to consult with, and possibly use, a local insurance agent handling multiple lines.

FWIW, we had shopped around in CA every few years, and AAA was always quite a bit cheaper. We never knew why that was the case, but we were happy to accept that insurer's lower premiums for the same coverage. The two times we made claims made it clear to us that we were receiving top-quality service (e.g., repainting the entire body of an M6 without complaint).

We chose to use an independent agent when we lived in New Hampshire, and our agent was pretty forthcoming regarding the intersection between pricing and service. We felt that was advice worth paying for, knowing that it was baked-into the rate itself. In any case, insurance rates in NH were stupidly low compared to what we'd been paying for the same coverage in California. That left us feeling like we had quite a bit of flexibility in terms of what we chose to buy.
