Great car It will no doubt be, but It's plain and has got a bulbous front third. Everyone knows it but for some reason doesn't want to say.

While I don't hate the design/look, I think he has a small point. Like Lexus, I think BMW tried to be different just because they wanted to, not because they needed to. Example, the headlights. I see absolutely no reason why they had to make that little tip towards the centre. Why couldn't they just make a standard/simple enclosure? I think the overall appearance of the car is fine, but it's the small details that make it a good design, not a great one.

Hey, at least they still made a good drivers car!

While the 2 series had my heart and hopes as an m3 owner looking to go smaller in the future, having seen one this weekend here in Wiesbaden I can't help but feel disappointed with its appearance in person. Here's to hoping the m2 pulls some of the bulldog looks and stance from the 1m as I'm sure BMW will give us something special in the performance category

Compared to previous 1 series models I think it looks much better.

The Styling is a bit vanilla...

I'd like to hear what Korean car the tester thinks looks better than a 2er (I know it's all subjective, but still)
The car is brilliant, but a little too discreetly dressed. I really wish that they would have brought more of the Racing version's looks to the street car.

+1.
The M performance parts bring it closer to the Racing Edition's look and stance. When fully equipped, I'm sure there will be sticker shock too.

This car does not look good from the back unfortunately. Everything else looks great.

"Its a step above an M sport, 4 pot brakes, M suspension"

Hmm my car has 6 pot brakes and M suspension too.

Looks are subjective, but keep in mind this is not an M-car. It is a sporty coupe, but not a sports car. It isn't meant to be in-your-face stylistically. It also has a very German look to it, which contrasts with the more angular style of current Japanese offerings.

Those looking for a more aggressive look will have to wait for the more sharply focused M2. Current renders look much more aggressive without the more awkward elements of the 1M (e.g. rear window to trunk transition). Even then, german cars tend to be more understated than their eastern competitors. Just look at the 911 and GTR.

The problem with the Korean cars that are "sexy" and wildly styled is the same problem I often find with MB vehicles and even perhaps Porsche SUV's. As soon as a newer version comes out, or a 5-10 years pass, they look SO dated, SO tired, and very out of place in current days. BMW, however, creates timelessly designed cars. This M235i is gorgeous IMO, and yet I still love the looks of the 1er's it is essentially replacing, there are 2-3 1er's in my neck of the woods. My car is 11 years old and I still get compliments on it, and people STARE at it. In 11 years people will only be staring at Korean, MB and old Porsche SUV's because they will be laughing at their dated, tired and out of place designs.

/rant

PS: Anyone complaining about the rear diffuser, check out the performance parts M235i with body colored diffuser, if you don't like the large black diffuser in the back, simply painting it body color, or maybe even perhaps silver to match the mirror caps is an option I think would help those that dislike the car from that perspective. I like it both ways personally, and would like to see someone match it to the mirror caps, as well as adding a lip or set of splitters up front colored the same as the mirror caps.

I went to see it for the first time today at my local dealership. It looks underwhelming but respectable. Certainly looks better than the F20.

Yes 2>1 for pure design, but the 1er was awkwardly unique, with a classic front end and tall greenhouse. I miss it, the 2er fails to evoke the same emotion on the road. That carries through to the driver seat as well, disconnected in comparison to the E82 or even my E84. Hoping M can change that. Agree with all statements that it's the best they offer, and an evolution over previous generation...but evolution isn't always a good thing for the purest.

I like the headlights, but prefer the overall shape of the 1-Series.

Agree. And I can't fathom how ANYONE could think the new Lexus styling is good. It's about as tasteless and overwrought as it gets.

I have to say I had my reservation when I first saw the pictures. Significantly better than the old 1-series but not good looking. Then I went to see it and drive it and...it is very good looking car, better than the 4 series, especially in the front. I still think the c pillar design of the 4 is better than the 2. The c pillar-trunk line is not the best 2-series feature. Overall: two thumbs up. Still waiting to see it in EB and then I'll know if "she" is the one for me...

One last note: promise a little write up of the old e90 330i vs new 435i M Sport vs M235i.

I really LOVE this car.... after driving it...you really wouldn't care what it looks like. I hadn't had a smile on my face like that in a BMW since I first drove an E46 M3 almost 10 years ago.

I agree with the sentiment that the 2 is a smartly dressed BMW, but a bit boring and plain. No experience driving one, so no comment on that.

I loved the 1 series coupe, admittedly ugly but with so much character.

Saw a black M235i getting washed at the jet-wash while I was cleaning my Estoril 1er.. Missed the photo opportunity unfortunately! From a looks point of view, the only thing the M235i could use is a unique 19" wheel upgrade option to separate it from the 1 series brand. Aside from that, looks (and sounds) flawless!

Reviews for the 135i were similarly enthusiastic, and that was before the PPK was available.

I think R&T had the best conclusion: excellent car, very fast, very engaging but, "like its predecessor, the 235i won't be a huge seller. Pity."
I say...who cares...better deals for us!
