Anyone else get a BMW USB drive in the mail?

I just got a 'thank you' gift from them for my 235 purchase in June. It's a USB drive in the shape of a key fob. Kinda cool.

As a security engineer, any USB drive received in the mail would never be connected to any of my computers. Use at your own risk.

Received the same thing a couple days ago.

Guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth and it's very cool looking, but 2gb? Seriously, BMW? Not sure if they've noticed but 16gb USB sticks run like $7 these days.

Got one. Cast metal reminiscent of a Hot Wheels car circa 1977. Absolutely unusable.

I hope whoever thought of it at BMW AG has since been fired.

That's a little dramatic. I'm more concerned with BMW gathering my driving habits with the on-board data recorder system and using it against me!

I was more perturbed by the likely cost of all the packaging that the cheap fob was in. That and I expected more than a couple old commercials to be on there as the 'special BMW content'

Put something interesting on the damn thing at least.

Yes, I got one. The packaging was more impressive than the USB drive.

Only insert when running tails and then wipe clean or boot into gparted or pmagic and then do a low level format. I keep a secondary or tertiary machine around and run kali, Ubuntu or Mint and us that just as a utility machine. All that said I'd love to get a drive from BMW that wreaked havoc then track it down and see how BMW rectifies the situation

Firing someone is a tad harsh but perhaps someone in Marketing deserves a pass on the next promotion. Such a huge drive for 2GB was a tech fail in our eyes but maybe it makes sense for all the older aged customers?

Speaking as an older aged customer. No, no it doesn't.

This is how my M Sport leather key case arrived in the mail today, albeit with a smashed box and non-functional product. A $35 key holder with a metal screw through it requiring a star key adapter (included) which didn't fit the screw so that I couldn't get the key fob into the case. A classic "case" of German over-engineering, folks!

Most users won't go through the same measures and you and I, which is why USB sticks are one of the most prolific means of spreading malware, next to social engineering.

Is this the "welcome package" from BMW? I just got an e-mail from BMW Canada saying to expect my welcome package in 8-10 weeks. Struck me as odd receiving a welcome package almost a year after taking delivery.

My home systems have not been compromised in over 10 years. If you want to take the risk, you're free to do so.

Now please excuse me while I go back to my faraday cage.
