Considering buying an m235/240. Is 0-60 in under 4 reasonably achievable?
HI there,
i'm seriously looking at an m235/240 xdrive or a infiniti q60 red sport. I think i prefer the BMW for a number of reasons. (i should add i'm coming from a recent lexus GS 350 awd) I've read through the forums for the past few weeks and think i have a fairly good idea of the performance potential in terms of dyno numbers. But i'm not really clear on how those numbers equate to performance exactly. I know the 0-60 is only a single metric, but personally i would very much like a car that could do it. Would a tune (piggy back or flash depending on which engine i think) and downpipe get me there with an n55? I can only run 94 octane...no access to E85 as i'm in Toronto Canada. Thanks Last edited by mattds; 11-21-2017 at 02:12 PM.. |

With m235 xdrive it would probably be possible to get under 4 seconds with a tune and downpipe. Would be close though and require a good custom jb4 map 6 or a flash tune. I would think the m240 would be easier to do this in, but I'm not sure anyone has gotten past the fuel limitations of that car yet. I know when the B58 first came out it was found to be even less friendly than the m235 in regards to fueling.
Q60 red sport has more potential in my opinion though. From a purely acceleration point of view. Especially after the initial 0-60. Though I don't consider the Q60 as much of a drivers car as the 2series. Also I think the current gen 2 series is a timeless design. I'm not sure how the Q60 is going to hold up in that regard.

i'm worried about the transmission in the infiniti and also, as you said the BMW is more of a drivers car. We have other cars which are more 'isolated' for longer trips, etc.

Canadian, eh? Parlez vous Francais? If yes investigate water cooled options - that should get you there.
Otherwise rather than chase some paper stat that's pretty meaningless in the real world I'd focus on overall driving experience of car and spend accordingly for upgrades.

Given that basic piggyback tuned M240x's are already doing lower 12s in the 1/4 mile and cutting lower 1.7 60 foots, they are certainly in the upper 3 second range for 0-60mph.
It will take a more aggressive piggyback tune and downpipe to get a M235x into the same range. A M235/M240 will be a far better performance driving car than the Infiniti Q60. A RWD M235/M240 even more so and a 6MT even that much more engaging. But RWD and then 6MT means you're giving up some 0-60 for pure driving enjoyment. If all you care about is straight line, off the line acceleration, the X variant is the way to go. |

I did see that the b58 engines seem to respond to tunes very well, but I wasn't sure how to equate 1/4 mile times to 0-60.
I didn't quite understand the comment about 'water cooled' do you mean look at the b58 as it has an air to water intercooler? |

No. There's some idiot countryman of yours who flooded his car then made up multiple screen names after getting banned. That was the joke about flooding Canadian cars.

I don't get either of these 2 cars if you are really just after acceleration times - probably plenty of other muscle-car type setups that would get you faster for less, in a straight line. Sort of sounds like you aren't completely sure what it is you are wanting, and I'd sort that out first.

my 0-60 times are 3.7 seconds.
Look at my profile for build sheet. It all comes down to manual vs auto and octane as well...

So right there the muscle cars are out. The only other cars in that range at the 4 series and the a5. I like the A5/S5 but i think the 2 series is more unique and it seems to be a performance bargain as it's a bit lighter than the other cars mentioned. |

What will you do after the 4 seconds are over?

In fact I would take the RS3 over a M2 as well.

Now that I think about it I haven't seen luminous is a while. He had an xdrive and upgraded the turbo. I believe his personal best was 3.1 or maybe 3.3 on stock all season tires.

CLA 45 runs some scary stock psi, but until the b58 is flash tunable this platform is going to be crippled
Iminluv has clocked a 3.1 0-60 without a launch (the audi and mercs need a 3k rpm launch to hit their numbers) with bigboost turbo and meth so theres huge potential in this engine for relatively low cost. |

Coming from a rwd is250 and an awd is350, I can tell you with confidence you will probably love the 2 series platform way more than anything from Lexus.
I personally recommend the rwd platform with a manual, even if it is slower. The zf8 auto is a beast in its own right. You can't really go wrong. |
