BMW 8 Series Revival Could Mean Death of 6 Series As We Currently Know It

COMMENTS

The revival of the BMW 8 Series model is coming in 2019-2020, says a recent Automobile report. Coinciding with the 8 Series resurrection is the death of the 6 Series lineup as we currently know it. Another way to look at this is the 6 Series being moved upmarket and rebranded as an 8 Series.

The 8 Series will be offered with a 4.0L V8, a 3.0L inline 6, and a plug-in hybrid with a 4 or 6 cylinder gasoline engine. It will compete directly with the likes of the 2-door S Class coupe and convertible, against which BMW hopes to be lighter and more nimble than by use of its CLAR architecture, already in use on the current 7 Series and expected to underpin the next 3, 4, 5, and 6 Series. There will be no gran coupe model for fear of cannibalizing 7 Series sales.

About that 6 Series -- the current lineup as we know it will be cleared out, including the coupe, convertible and gran coupe. Instead, the 6 series badge will be applied to the next generation 5 Series GT. We know this as the G32 6 Series GT.

The report also claims that the 3 Series GT and 4 Series Gran Coupe will be merged into a single model. And as reportedly earlier, there will also be a 2 Series Gran Coupe built off the UKL FWD/AWD platform.

Seems smart to axe a car while the 6GC is one of BMWs best looking and the GT3 series just moved to the platform

Cant wait for the 8 series GT3 race car

The 6 will remain but will be a smaller and lighter sporty GT. So it will get a new mission and give up it slightly confusing mission which was to big and heavy for a sports car and did GT work very well. Segment and mission definition is what it needs so clarity can only help, I hope.

The return of the 8 Series will easily carry the Grand Tourer mantle, and BMW has much unfinished business with the 8 Series: a cabriolet and the first-ever M8 (official).

1, 2,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and the 9 Series which will be the bridge car between BMW and Rolls-Royce.

Bring on the damn 8 Series!!!!!

That's what I thought I had read as well. Basically they want to turn the 6 coupe into a proper GT car and 911 fighter, which makes sense to me.

If BMW are going to change the 6 series radically I'd suggest putting the engine the middle

yep

6 series = light sporty GT car

8 series = Ultra luxury Coupe
You are right.

The new 6 Series can and should be between the size of a 991.2 Porsche and an Aston Martin Vanquish.

A carbon core will help with weight and little to no back seats will narrow the focus as well.

The 8 Series has many possibilities within its segment and be the damn flagship they need.

The return of the damn king (8 Series) decades after it came out and just now in the last few years gets respect.

I don't care what anyone says the E31 850CSi is a cold ride, even in 2016.

The S-Class Coupe is no joke though. Daimler knows their demographic and it's very interesting psychographics very well as they should.

The Bentley Continental GT in V8 form is a very nice car.

Segment definition is what BMW knows they must accomplish.

And each upper segment car that they release will help their long-time vision of having all numbers represented from the 1 Series through the future 9 Series.

The new 6 should be a bad ride especially the M6 with the new 4.0 twin turbo V8!

This seems like a confusing move to me. The current 6-series has gotten very large, but it is still not of the same character as the short-lived 8-series. The 6-series has the character of a very traditional coupe with it's clearly defined rear deck lid. The 8-series started life with more of a modern sports coupe character, with its wedge shape, pop-up headlights, and long sloping rear window. It still had a full decklid, but it's character had less three-box styling than the 6.

IMO, this looks like an effort by BMW to better position the 6er to sell at a higher price point. I don't think the current 6er has the model cachet required to sell against the S-class coupe, so BMW are left with few options. They have to rebrand the car in order to match market movements. So this appears to be a market-driven decision, not a design-driven decision. Disappointing.

This comment though, makes no sense whatsoever:

BMW really seems to be struggling with the whole odd-numbered sedans, even-numbered coupes designation. The GranCoupe concept always made sense to me, because I understood the "coupe styling" aspect of these cars. The GT cars, however, have no coupe styling whatsoever. They border on being crossovers. The entire reason for moving to the odd/even, sedan/coupe nomenclature was to build model-line prestige for the coupes. Is BMW considering this a failed experiment? Lumping the GT cars in to the even-numbered coupe line-up would seem to be an admission of failure. Very puzzling.

I'm a little confused. Is the 5 series GT the same as the 5er Gran Turismo that we currently know? Or will the 5GT (hypothetical 6 series) coexist with the Gran Turismo and be a dedicated sports car that competes with the likes of a 911? If the 5GT = 5 Gran Turismo, then there is no sports car in that.

Well if they want the 8 series to officially battle the S class they better make the car well. Interior and exterior.

Wonder if that means getting the current 6er now is a good idea...?

They should not fear cannibalizing the 7 series because it's not like the 7 series is a big seller anyway. If they make the new 8 series GC a big hit or a big seller in terms of number of units compared to the current 7, then it's a win. Put everything you got into it.

I'd say the BMW 6 series will be a Porsche 911 rival until the 8 series launches. The 8 series is what I call a beautiful looking GT car. Because of the styling. I hope BMW brings back the V12 & make an ///M8 since they never made one due the green movement in Germany back in the 1990's. Please BMW bring back this beautiful Grand Tourer.
