Honestly I feel that an oil temperature gauge is nice, but I'd rather have an oil pressure gauge. I can live without the temperature gauge, but I'll probably add a guage pod with a mechanical oil pressure gauge somewhere once I get my car.

I figure if either dummy light comes on I'll just shut the car down immediately.

By the time the dummy light for oil pressure comes on, what might have been an easy fix, could have become a major engine repair, depending on the amount of delay/caution/what-have-you built into the system.

I can't imagine the system reacting slower than a person noticing the pressure drop. Once the sensor reads a low level it should come immediately.

My STi spun a bearing due to low oil level and low oil pressure without ever triggering the dummy light. I've got little faith in those dummy lights.

Goddawm stop complaining and buy a toyota...it is what it is, maybe the LCI will have it or wait for the M2

If you dont like the fact theres no gauge...dont buy it

Really getting tired of all the "oh this is not a proper M" and "oh no oil temp" topics

So, I head that the M235i isn't a real M car because it doesn't come with an oil temp gauge...

This is the same stuff IO heard on the M board about the lack of an oil dipstick too.

this is not a rant thread... the purpose of the original question is to identify how to properly operate the car without having the oil/temp gauge. that said, i appreciate everyone's input.

Just acquired a 2015 228i and have the same thoughts and concerns. I'll even wait more than 15 minutes sometimes just to be sure the car's warm. I plan on keeping the car for it's entire life, unlike a lot of people who either lease or just cycle through endless purchases, so why take a stupid, unnecessary chance that could mean heavy out-of-warranty repairs down the road? Especially when that situation could potentially happen multiple times a day if I let the car sit for a decent length of time and cool back down

I reckon - and this is just my subjective view - that the tyre temperatures are a reasonable indicator of when the car is ready to be pushed or not. Even in the summer, my tyres take a surprising amount of time (15+ mins on a main road) to get to working temperature. Other threads seem to indicate a similar time for engine warm-up, so if I'm out for a fun drive rather than a commute (which will be limited by the other traffic anyway) I just put the tyre temp monitor on and wait 'till they're all up at working temperature. Which is usually around 15 mins but can be longer (e.g. if the car's been in a cool garage in the summer).

There are a lot of threads about oil and water temperature and one point regularly made is 'Just where do you think that figure is being measured?'. More qualified mechanical types than me point out that any gauge is just indicative: most oil and water circulation systems are quite complex. So you might prefer a warning system that tells you there's a problem versus a temp reading that's gives a false sense of security. Not saying I agree, but I can see the point
