My answer is the GT4, love that car. Viper is also an interesting proposition.
W///, what other cars are you looking at besides the M2? What 'percentage' of you is already convinced that you'll be in an M2. I'm at about 95% myself, but I'm more curious to see what other cars you'd consider. I think you said F80 as one?

It changes on a daily basis haha. I guess I'd say
60% M2
20% F80 M3 LCI (maybe ZCP if it's worth it)
10% do nothing for a few years and buy used Porsche
5% do nothing buy used M6 Gran Coupe
4% get a used Dodge Viper
1% be financially smart and stop being a car guy

So as you can see, I'm all over the place, but the M2 is firmly in first place. I'm just not about raw power and enjoy cars like the Cayman more than the 911. I think that will apply between the M2 vs M3 as well.

LOL. I like this idea.. here is my list...

100% M2 CSL
100% M2 Gran Coupe
50% M2... really need pricing and curb weight to get super excited
25% Euro Delivery of an X1 or find E84 X1 M Sport
10% Fuck off! and buy an F80 M3
10% do nothing for a few years and buy used Porsche
5% do nothing and in 10 years buy used M6 Geeze Coupe or X5M Geeze

Good to see you have 300% of your car planning in place.

Is keeping your 1M not one of the options? I was kinda surprised to not see it on there. Or does that fall under the add X1 category?

Yes you are correct! , it's with the " upgrade my daily driver not my weekend car " part of the wish list. Lol

Well, since we're doing the percentages game, I'll play:
E92 M3 - 10%
M2 - 20%
M3 - 20%
M4 - 30%
Cayman S - 20%

Now if I can hold out until next year and BMW pulls out a surprise with the M2 CSL (~$75K ), it just might be a game changer.

One thing to bear in mind, although the numbers look similar on paper, these cars are nothing alike. Mid-engine 2-seat pure sportscar vs. a 2+2 sports coupe with the engine in front. Also NA flat-6 vs. Turbo (single or twin) I-6.

Porsche tends to be a lot more expensive overall than BMW.

The big advantage (aside from performance) the Cayman has is that it is available right now. So, if you don't want to wait another 2 years to get the M2, then the Cayman (S r GTS) is really the best thing out there right now.

Also, in general I try to avoid buying any car the first model year it's out. I work as an engineer, so I know small bugs and problems tend to sneak into those first models and I'd rather let someone else be their beta testers... So realistically, I probably wouldn't buy an M2 for at least a year or two after it's released. So probably some time if 2017 or 2018 I would want to buy an M2. I don't really want to wait another 2-3 years for something to replace my E82.

So, most likely I'm going to buy the Cayman. Probably... Maybe... I think...
Early testers etc note:

I have an early '08 e90 M3 manual.

The clutch is the weaker version (updated '09), and the navi is the antiquated version.

Nonetheless, the car is solid. I am the fourth owner and have zero regrets. As a most recent anecdote, I had a great weekend driving this car and would see no need to change it.

A first year model run may have some quirks, but I would not divert to a different model or manufacturer for the reason of the car being on its first year of production. Especially on an M car. These cars are well built.

An M car is never really a first year model run as the car is produced for a year prior to the M model being announced. While there are different fenders , motor, body parts etc, the overall chassis and most of the switchgear has had a year of normal customer use

For those who are still interested in the GT4, word has come from Andreas Preuninger (head of Porsche GT) that there will be more coming. Seems like 1250 - 1500 for U.S:

AP gives the highlights: http://rennlist.com/forums/991-gt3-a...reuninger.html

Some discussion: http://rennlist.com/forums/gt4/89584...nd-no-pdk.html

Thanks for the heads-up.
"The success of the GT4 in a manual version has helped make the case that there is a market demand for that type of transmission in the GT product line. And [Andreas Preuninger] hinted that the next base gt3 might as well have a manual transmission as an alternative (option) to PDK."
Manuals aren't written off yet. Might be that they start to become a statement for sports cars nowadays (for the second or third in line of the top of the range - not for the top horses itself). I'm biased, of course.

Funny how Porsche even is admitting that they were not as prepared as they should have been when making this new all out sports car...

Hope the M2 can get its power down better than M4 in this video.

Surprising... I was thinking the M4 would take it, but obviously with the wheels spinning, it's pretty much all over. They did mention the tires were sub-par...

Anyway, not complaining that the GT4 won the drag though!

FYI,

GT4 order books are open again. Dealer offered me a slot below MSRP with a March build date. I have a feeling Porsche is about to start pumping out GT4s.

wow this is so tempting if they are truly offering MSRP. I'm actually a bigger fan of the Boxster Spyder.

But damn.....That is oh so tempting....

I like the Spyder, but just not how they priced it. It's just too close to the GT4 considering it doesn't have some of the suspension of the GT cars as well as being slightly down on power.

Much deliberation done, ordered a Spyder, on the road a better daily driver (versus the GT4), ground clearance mainly, and top down (yes not a simple thing) the sound is going to be brilliant.

Good luck guys and girls with your decisions.

I'm not buying an M2 to beat the local rice rockets in an impromptu Friday night rubber burning drag race, thanks.

For me, it all comes down to the test drive. Magazine numbers are interesting, but it's the subjective driving experience that matters to me.

As of right now (without test driving the M2 or the new turbo Cayman), I'd put it at:

C7 Corvette - 60%
M2 - 25%
CPO Cayman S - 10%
CPO 997.2 - 5%

But that could change if I end up really liking the way the M2 drives -- or if Porsche manages to either improve the performance (especially the low-end torque) of the base Cayman and/or reduce the price of the Cayman S.
