I'm guessing you don't have the tech package? If you do it's in the iDrive.

I know in the past you used to be able to register on the BMW website and download the manuals.

Also, there is an "official" BMW app for iPhone and iPad to read manuals.
It requires a VIN number to get the manual into thew app. Since I'm still waiting for mine, I just got an M240 VIN number from a BMW dealer website from a for sale listing

Thanks, but I've been there and for 2017, only the X1 manuals are there and even those links are bad.

Just use the 228 manuals from 2016.
The exact same thing.
Ok maybe not 100% the same but close enough.
It worked fine for me for the 235 manuals. I'm getting a 240 but the 235 book is way more than what I need anyway.
As for vin for the iPad app - just grab one from the web for any 228-230. All you need it for is to get the manual.
