I live in Chicago where they temporarily cover potholes with large steel sheets that raise up above the ground a few inches...just inadvertently smashed one the other day and it got my lip good. Oh well, only $300 to replace if I want to next spring. The lip and splitters just look too good not to have on the car!

There is one of the plates on Morgan and Randolph, and the middle sticks way up in the air. I'm fairly certain thats the one that got me...never had an issue with any of the others. I was able to fix some of the damage with touch up paint, and some other steps to reset the damage so its not noticeable unless you are looking for it. Should be a good snowplow through winter haha |

Three days after installing my front M Performance lip, I drove up a cobbled incline, which caught the front lip and folded it under the front of my car!
Not only was the lip dead, it also broke a number of different plastic bits that it was secured to, which required complete bumper removal to replace The cost in parts was over £500 ($650), including the costs of the lip.. Since removing, I have fitted H&R springs and Koni dampers, there's no way I'll re-fit the splitter now! Richard

Front Lip on Convertible
Aside from the issues of scraping, I have been told by BMW that the lip is not approved for the cabriolet. The parts guy even contacted BMW and was told they would not support installation. For some reason it is a coupe only addition. Makes no sense as all the rads and coolers installations should be identical on both and I'm sure the ride height also.
Would love to hear from anyone with more detailed information on why there is an issue. Cooling is about the only thing I can see why they are concerned buy this would mean there is a build difference. I see there is a difference between their front lip and most aftermarket units whereas theirs is quite open not to restrict the airflow as much. Welcome comments on design constraints |

they look great and create some minimal protection for your bumper. Like most mentioned already, if you're going to scrape, you will do it either way but it's a lot cheaper to replace the splitter than a new bumper.

I have had my on for a little over a week, scraped once on my buddies VERY steep driveway. Doesn't scrape on my driveway or any speed bumps in my office parking lot. Haven't scraped it on a curb (yet) because I know its there, and I try my best to be careful! It's too good looking not to have on...

You have to find the right angle of attack with these things. If you go straight at speed bumps and driveways you'll meet the pavement for sure. Was at stock height with mine and only scraped a few times on a steep driveway or ramp where I wasn't going slow enough, but now with lowering springs I imagine I'm going to run into some of the same struggles you guys have.
Can't believe some have been through 4+ lips already! That's crazy! But I remember how the roads were in the city and totally understand why..

When I first took mine out I caught the lip and thought I'd wrecked it.. I've been careful since and I've not lowered mine any further

I hit a really steep parking garage entrance ramp at the wrong angle. It broke part of the bottom off and additionally broke out part of the bottom of the bumper. Luckily it all went back together fine. I couldn't imagine what my bumper would have looked like without the lip in that situation. Considering the scrapes on the front I'm pretty sure it was bent vertical during the scraping, this is one tough lip |

It seems like a lot of guys are going through front splitters pretty fast. If you want to save some money, check out my thread I posted a couple days ago. They are half the price of OEM, and look identical!
